Mariah's first tour kicked off in Miami on November 3, 1993 taking her to six different
US cities in five weeks. The tour placed emphasis on what had earned Mariah her
success her voice and her songs.
Mariah sang most of her hit singles from her previous two albums and songs from her Music Box album, as well as unreleased songs like Vanishing, All In Your Mind or Now That I Know, and a cover of the S.O.S. Bands Just Be Good To Me. The setlist was the same for all concerts except the final show, at New Yorks Madison Square Garden, where Mariah decided to add a Christmas song since it was the holiday season. For the encore, she put on a short red dress and sang Santa Claus Is Comin To Town.
Id like to dedicate this next song to the men who subdued the gunman on the Long Island Rail Road this week, and prevented him from killing even more people. I grew up on Long Island and I took the Long Island Rail Road thousands of times, and a lot of people very close to me take the Long Island Rail Road every day; and I was shocked and horrified by this tragedy. So, I decided to donate the funds from the sales of this next single to the families of the victims of the Long Island Rail Road tragedy. Its called Hero.
Mariah once again based her show around her hit singles, and included plenty of new songs from the Daydream album, including the fan favorite Underneath The Stars.Again, she performed The S.O.S. Bands Just Be Good To Me. Mariah added an interesting twist to Anytime You Need A Friend, the song that closed the shows. She sang the song with a choir, and right after the bridge, the song went straight into the C&C remix. As a special treat for her Japanese fans, Mariah returned to the stage after the encore to perform All I Want For Christmas Is You, which was wildly successful in Japan. The fans didnt care whether it was the middle of March or not. In June, Mariah took the Daydream Tour to Europe, performing four shows throughout the continent. The setlists duplicated the Japan shows, with the omission of All I Want For Christmas Is You at the end. Mariah began the Butterfly Tour with a series of successful shows at the Tokyo Dome in Japan. The Butterfly Tour was the first tour where Mariah changed the setlist a little bit for most of the shows. In Japan, she performed an abbreviated show in which she did not perform The Roof, Breakdown, Whenever You Call or Without You. In their place, she performed Babydoll. Mariah swept through Australia during the beginning part of February. The Australian tour began in Brisbane and concluded in Melbourne on February 13. One of the highlights of the tour was when Olivia Newton-John joined her onstage in Melbourne to perform Hopelessly Devoted To You.
Aloha Stadium was not intended to be the last show of the tour. It was supposed to be the first show of the U.S. leg of the tour, but that never came to be. Mariah cancelled plans to take the tour into the states when she found out she was due to start filming Double O Soul with Chris Tucker. Incidentally, that never happened, as Tucker cancelled production on the film for whatever reason.
Mariah kicked off each show with an energetic rendition of her #1 hit Emotions. She performed songs from the Rainbow album - Crybaby, Petals, Can't Take That Away (Mariah's Theme), X-Girlfriend, and Thank God I Found You, which she performed with her friend and backup singer Trey Lorenz. Each show closed with Honey, which found Mariah in a sailor outfit, dancing it up with her dancers. The encore saw Mariah coming back on stage to perform Vision Of Love and a medley of Rainbow Interlude and Hero. Confetti fell down into the arenas as Mariah exited the stage singing the refrain from Butterfly. While those songs were a staple of almost every show on the tour, some other songs were performed for select dates. Mariah performed Sweetheart at the first couple of shows before dropping it. She did Without You and Make It Happen in Europe. In Japan, she encored with what is possibly her biggest hit there, All I Want For Christmas Is You. Finally, fans in Singapore and Los Angeles were treated to a performance of I Still Believe/Pure Imagination.
"I am passionate about doing something more intimate for my fans," Carey said in a statement. "I'm used to doing arena tours and for me this is a whole new experience. This is about my music and my fans."
Mariah allowed her fans to design the setlist for each of her shows via her official website by choosing their 20 favorite songs. Songs performed in selected shows included You Got Me, One Sweet Day, What Would You Do - joined on stage by Damizza, Shade Sheist and Nate Dogg in Universal City on December 17, 2003 - and Joy To The World, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing and All I Want For Christmas Is You during the Christmas Season. |
