MARIAH CAREY'S FRIENDS SKEPTICAL ABOUT HER MARRIAGE
Sometimes, you need a good friend brave enough to tell you where you're going wrong. And sometimes you need your friends to shut their bleeding mouths, which is the position Mariah Carey finds herself in at the moment. One un-named friend (i.e. fictional) of the singer, talking of her two-month-old marriage to Nick Cannon told Life and Style Weekly magazine, "I give the marriage six months, tops. I can't see it lasting."It's a good job they interviewed such a close friend, since you don't get insight like that just anywhere, you know. The friend continued, speaking in deliciously-phrased sound bites, almost as though they were a professional journalist making up a story, "Mariah's assistants and friends call him 'Whipped Nick' behind his back. They have little respect for him because he won't stand up for himself. Nick does whatever Mariah wants him to - he's like her puppy. It seems like he spends more time in the stores with Mariah's credit card than he does with Mariah herself."
So he won't stand up for himself yet he spends little time with her and is off out spending her money? I'd settle for a portion of that whipping. He's clearly not as daft as he looks.

MARIAH CAREY'S A FRIDAY NIGHT FAVOURITE
We’re loving that you’ve moved to Sunday for the Sunday Night Project. Who’s been the best host?
Justin: Well that’s a difficult one because there’s a long list but the best ones have been Jamie Oliver and David Tennant. Oh, also Noel Edmonds and Chris Moyles, who was brilliant.
Alan: Oh God I could go on forever too. Mariah was great. I don’t know whether it was the people around her giving diva demands, you know you hear these diva rumours, but she was really nice. She was like, “Where do you want me? Do you want me to do this now?” and she gave a lot of input.
Then the Big Brother lot came along and it was ridiculous. Some couldn’t be in the same room and they were demanding drinks. Then Mariah comes in and was like, “What do you want me to say?”

GOOD NEWS FOR NE-YO, BAD NEWS FOR MARIAH
Poor old Coldplay. They've finally made No.1 after eight years of trying, but now they're about to be knocked off. The guy doing the dirty on them? R&B singer Ne-Yo, who's poised to nab his second chart-topper on Sunday with "Closer".We reckon this is a good thing. Ne-Yo may try a bit too hard to remind us he's a Michael Jackson fan in the "Closer" video, but the song itself is a first-rate piece of urban disco - easily Ne-Yo's most interesting single to date.
While champagne corks are popping at the Ne-Yo residence, vases will be flying at Mariah Carey Towers. The second single from her E=MC2 album, "Bye Bye", is shaping up to be an almighty flop, with its final chart position likely to fall somewhere been 25 and 30. Only one of Mariah's post-Glitter singles has charted this low: "Say Somethin", which at least had the excuse of being the fifth single from its album.
What's gone wrong? Well, the general consensus is that "Bye Bye" is a little bit Mariah-by-numbers. It's a safe, schmaltzy R&B ballad that's precision-tooled for US radio, but ironically enough US radio doesn't seem too keen on it, causing "Bye Bye" to perform poorly across the pond too.
Nevertheless, Mariah fans can console themselves with this thought: the "Bye Bye" blunder should persuade her to choose more adventurous singles in the future. She's plumped for another ballad as E=MC2's third single, but maybe we could have "Migrate", the album's Danja-produced club tune, after that?

MARIAH CAREY - "BYE BYE"
Right, first of all, shut up, OK? Don't be putting that sneer on your face just because Mariah is Mariah and can sometimes come across as being about as sincere as Alexa Chung giving a compliment. And don't assume that just because this song contains a clear attempt to poke people in tender spots, particularly anyone who is grieving the loss of a close friend or relative, that it's all cynical manipulation of emotion, with the aim of securing The All-Important Death Dollar. The thing is, any song of support to people who are in the midst of grief will look more than a little self-serving to the casual observer, unless you're that person in that situation. I was flicking through some of the comments that accompany the different versions of this video on YouTube, and while a certain amount of them are standard YouTube comment fare (basically cowards yelling abuse from a very safe distance, yawn!) there are a few from people who have found this song to be genuinely useful.
And if that's the case, who are we to say they're wrong? I for one am enormously pleased to hear a Mariah Carey song which isn't about how sexy she is, and how we all really want to get close to her. I mean there's that Christmas one, but that's only for winter. You can at least play this one in the sunshine without feeling like a simpleton who can't let Santa go.
Musically, the song rests on the ultimate chord sequence for people who are seeking reassurance and emotional warmth from their music. It's that perpetually decending run of circling, calming chords which has been used in pastoral classics like Pachelbel's Canon, "Ladies and Gentlemen we are Floating in Space" by Spiritualized, "All Together Now" by the Farm, and erm... "Basket Case" by Green Day. It's infallible!
Also, the video, specifically the home movies of Mariah meeting her fans, and the look on their faces when they shake her hand or she signs their poster... it's just really touching. So, call it cynical, call it manipulative, call it Michael Jackson-style "Heal The World" hubris, call it what you like, I won't have a word said against this.
Apart from the fact that it has no proper melody, it's just those lovely chords and some singing. That's the only thing. Otherwise, give her a break, people, she's trying to be nice!

"VISION OF LOVE" IS GRATING KARAOKE SONG
EW.com did a feature on 10 Great (and 10 Grating) Karaoke Songs, and "Vision of Love" made the latter because of how hard it is to sing.![]() |
GRATING
"VISION OF LOVE"
Mariah Carey
Congratulations, you were first soprano in your school choir. You're the best karaoke singer in your group of friends, and you hum along to Mariah all the time on your iPod without missing a note. Okay, now sit down, we have some bad news: You cannot do this song. Seriously. Tackling this lung-crusher might seem like a fun challenge, but three minutes, five octaves, and one 10-second note later, you will realize that you did not conquer "Vision of Love." "Vision of Love" conquered you.

CELEBRATING BLACK MUSIC MONTH: CHART TOPPING DIVA'S
Continuing our celebration of Black Music Month, this week's featured moments are dedicated to the best chart topping, record breaking, and soul stirring R&B/Soul singers from Whitney and Mary to Aretha and Chaka. Plus get the lowdown on the latest news and upcoming projects from each featured diva.Recorded for her sixth studio album Daydream, "Fantasy" quickly became yet another #1 single for the Mariah Carey who burst onto the scene in 1990 with "Vision of Love". Combining funk, R&B, and pop elements on the song co-written by Carey, Fantasy debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1995, a career first for the singer and a record setting debut that is only shared with Michael Jackson whose "You Are Not Alone" pulled the same feat in August of 1995.
Between September and November of 1995, Carey held on to the #1 spot only to be replaced by Whitney Houston's "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)". In total, Fantasy spent 23 weeks in the top fourty and was later certified double platinum. Overall, Mariah Carey holds the distinction of being one of the world's top selling and chart topping female artists, with a record 18 #1 singles and 11 Platinum-selling studio albums.
Mariah Carey's "E=MC2" debuted on the Billboard Hot 200 Albums chart at #1 this April featuring the #1 single "Touch My Body" and was 2008's highest debutting album until Lil Wayne's recent chart topping album "The Carter III" sold well over 1 million albums in it's first week. Carey can also be seen with Adam Sandler in this summer's action/comedy "You Don't Mess With A Zohan".

MARIAH AND NICK: LAVISH PARTY PLANS REVEALED
Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon married in a super-small ceremony in April, but they are still expecting gifts - and they've registered at upscale New York City department store Bergdorf Goodman. The R&B diva, 39, and her hubby, 27, have compiled an extravagant 40-item wish list to complete their domestic bliss, a new report suggests.According to a report from In Touch Weekly the high end wish list includes a 19th-century Moser vase from Devonia Antiques (worth $1,950), a Buccellati sterling silver picture frame that goes for a cool $1,695 and 24 Christofle Aria place settings for $2,190 - each.
The report also reveals the details of what sounds like a very nice we just got married bash that the two are planning to celebrate again. The magazine clams that the newlyweds are reportedly planning a lavish party to celebrate their union later this summer, so there's still time to start shopping for the couple who already seem to have it all.
The report then has this: "Mariah and Nick, who wed in front of a small gathering on April 30 in the Bahamas, have expensive tastes." Indeed.

MARIAH CAREY, NICK CANNON ON THE ROCKS?
According to a new report, there may already be trouble in paradise for newly married couple Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey. Superstar R&B singer Mariah Carey and her husband, former Nickelodeon star Nick Cannon, may be having some relationship trouble... no one saw that coming.Life & Style Magazine reports: Nick worked on the set of wife Mariah Carey's video shoot for her single "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time" in Oahu, Hawaii, on June 9. But instead of co-starring as Mariah's love interest, Nick, 27, assisted the pop star between takes. Some close to the couple fear Nick's subservient status is a sign the couple's union is headed for trouble.
One source close to Mariah says: "I give the marriage six months, tops. I can't see it lasting."

Her sixth studio album now becomes her sixth platinum album to date. The follow-up to Carey's 2005 comeback disc The Emancipation Of Mimi, this year's E=MC2 features the Number One single "Touch My Body" and the current radio single "Bye Bye". "Some people say, 'Okay, well you shouldn't sing these people's songs' or whatever because I have a lot of songs that are very high-key and it's not easy sometimes."
"The actual craft of singing and learning how to do different things with your voice, but that is something that I still work on. Like I still try to learn, try not to hurt my voice but I do experiment with like the top notes and the different sections of my voice."
"People help me do my hair and make-up and clothes and get it all together and... [laughs] Whatever is coming out of your spirit shines through and that's really what beauty is about more than anything."
"It's very exciting, very exciting to have the album be so successful already. I put a lot of myself into this record."

Excerpts from the Interview
Priya Krishnamoorthy: If your music and videos are colourful then so is your life. Recently in a surprise wedding you married 27-year-old actor Nick Cannon within weeks of meeting him. This is something I came across and I quote you, "I don't think I have ever experienced a relationship of the calibre I write about in my love songs." Do you feel differently now?
Mariah Carey: Completely different. Yes. And it's interesting because I have had this conversation with my husband also. Everything has heightened because you really are in love now. Everything has suddenly changed. I feel I had written about those things because I had connected with people like that. I had romanticised about other relationships but they were never what my relationship is now. People wrote to me saying I am an eternal optimist but unrealistic for believing in one person who I am destined to be with. When it actually did happen to me, it was an amazing thing because it answered all my prayers. Lot of people don't believe in all this, but I do.
PK: It is this ability to touch people's heart with your music that got you onto the pages of Time magazine. In 2008, you have been voted as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
MC: I didn't even understand. I thought it was just entertainment. I had no idea of the enormity of the situation or what it meant. So when I found out, I was like 'are you serious?'
PK: The icing on the cake came as praise from musician Stevie Wonder.
MC: Stevie Wonder is my ultimate favourite artist. We share a very close relationship because he knows how inspirational he has been to me. So to see what he wrote about me, I had to just call him and thank him for everything. His words were the highest points in my career.
PK: When are you planning to come to India?
MC: I want to go everywhere and I really want to come to India. Please let my fans in India know how grateful I am for their support.

CELEBS ON THE COUCH
Mariah and Nick The current edition of Reveal Magazine features a sequences of photos of Mariah and Nick. The magazine’s Love Doctors have analysed the pictures, and describe what their body language reveals about their relationship (as well as somehow managing to refer to Nick as “Chris” throughout the article!):
From this sequence it’s clear who wears the trousers in this relationship! Mariah’s new hubby Nick certainly knows his place- and that’s firmly behind the superstar diva.
Stepping out in front, Mariah makes sure she’s in the limelight as she pulls Nick’s arms around her waist, with her hands on top of his. This lady is in complete control.
PRESCRIPTION: Nick is obviously happy to be dominated as he’s beaming from ear to ear. In fact, both are flashing their teeth for the camera. But by wearing shades, the loved-up couple are trying to retain some privacy.

T.I. BUYS MARIAH EXPENSIVE LUGGAGE
A couple months ago, we named "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time" the best track on MC's recent E=MC2 album and while this new remix doesn't necessarily make it that much better, we'll never complain about a breezy T.I. verse. The rapper is in "My Love" guest shot mode here, offering his lady expensive gifts (though we're pretty sure Mariah can buy her own Louis Vuitton).Still, the beat - produced by T.I. buddy DJ Toomp - is the star: perfect for your top-down beach drives and/or the soundtrack to The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2. Mariah is in a pure pop mood, keeping her trademark vocal runs in check while sticking close to the melody. A late, great entry into the Song of the Summer Sweepstakes.

MARIAH GIVEN A ROYAL CELEBRATION IN THE PHILIPPINES
Mariah Carey is already happily married to actor and rapper Nick Cannon, but wedding vows and golden rings have certainly not hampered this talented diva from still conquering the music scene.Having been touted recently as the only artist ever to beat Elvis Presley in having the most number of chart-topping hits worldwide, Mariah Carey was hailed and honored last June 13 in Eastwood City, Libis. This victory party celebrated the smashing success of her newest album, E=MC2. This 14-track album hit gold in the Philippines just eight days after its release, with its carrier single "Touch My Body" effortlessly ruling the airwaves.
"Touch My Body" is Mariah's 18th chart-topper since her musical debut in 1990. The success of this song also catapulted the 38-year-old siren to the Number 2 spotlight in the Billboard records--next only to The Beatles, who had 20 worldwide hits, making them cling on firmly to the top spot. The King of Rock 'n Roll, Elvis Presley, had 17 hits in the Billboard charts.
ROYAL CELEBRATION. The posh victory party was spearheaded by MCA Music Inc., allowing MCA Music artists perform covers of songs popularized by the sultry diva.
Richard Poon ("My All"), Dianne Elise ("Bye Bye"), Chicosci ("Breakdown"), Miguel Escueta ("We Belong Together"), Pedicab ("Heartbreaker") and Zoo ("Always Be My Baby") all had explosive performances that were warmly welcomed by Mariah's avid supporters seated in the audience. Collectively called Mimi Lambs, these fans hooted and shouted as the singers rendered their own cover of a Mariah song plus a song from their own repertoire.
The event set-up in Libis was quite elaborate, with black, purple, and pink balloons lining not only the stage, but also the mini-runway that cut across it. The catwalk was used primarily by models garbed in exquisite timepieces for the fashion show held during the event. In line with the posh arrangements that pervaded the venue, a huge LCD screen was propped in the center and repeatedly played Mariah's music video of her smash hit "Touch My Body."
The event was hosted by Magic 89.9 disc jockeys Sam YG and Suzie, as well as MTV VJ and Bb. Pilipinas World title-holder Maggie Wilson.
ALL HAIL THE QUEEN. Aside from the recent release of the Mariah VIP Card, which entitles the owner to several discount privileges in select establishments nationwide, the soulful siren also released a classy signature scent to match her sparkling personality.
With her own perfume line soon to be available in the market, Mariah joins the ranks of Latina beauty Jennifer Lopez, pop princess Christina Aguilera, and hip-hop maven Gwen Stefani in having a signature fragrance that mimics her vivacious outlook in life.
Labeled M by Mariah Carey, Mariah's newest perfume collection aims to embody her beauty, femininity, and glamour--traits that have always been associated with the singer throughout her eighteen-year career in the music industry.
MARIAH IN THE PHILIPPINES? At the event, PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) took the opportunity to ask a representative from MCA Music Inc. if a concert of the Queen herself could possibly visit the Philippines in the future.
"It really depends on her schedule," replied label executive Katherine Choy. "Actually she was in Japan last time and we brought some friends from the media to be with her there," she recalled. "It's really not impossible. If we find someone who's really interested [to bring her here], then, why not?" she said with a smile.

ON THE COUCH WITH MARIAH CAREY
Our "first time" happened in bed. I mean, my first interview with Mariah Carey, nicknamed Mimi, way back in 1999 when she was in Hong Kong to promote her album, Rainbow. Mariah was tired after several rounds of interviews with more than two dozen journalists from around Asia and, toward early evening, she requested that we do the interview in her hotel room, with us six journalists seated around her bed where Mariah reclined like a modern-day Cleopatra. Two weeks ago, we did it again. I mean, have another interview, this time with Mariah reclining on a couch, as friendly and as down-to-earth and as accommodating as ever, even violating a "no-photographs" rule and agreeing to pose for picture with me after I gave her a copy of my first Conversation titled In bed with Mariah Carey. It happened at a suite of The Peninsula in Tokyo where Mariah was promoting her new album, E=MC2. Her face spelled H-A-P-P-I-N-E-S-S. Very obviously, she has made it "through the rain", to quote the now-classic song titled Make It Through the Rain which she recorded during a slump in her life and career a few years ago. A song that has become a favorite piece among aspirants in singing contests. But, of course, the fact that she's on honeymoon mode explained the glow around Mariah. Last April 30, she surprised the world by getting married to singer-actor Nick Cannon at a sunset ceremony near the ocean in the Bahamas where Mariah owns an estate. They reportedly met in 2005 but started dating only last March. The proposal was straight out of a romantic movie. Here's how People magazine described it: On April 25, Cannon took Carey to the roof of her New York City apartment to see the Empire State Building, lit pink and lavender to honor her album E=MC2. As he often did, he gave her a Ring Pop candy shaped like a big jewel. But inside the wrapper was a 17-carat pink-diamond ring created by Jacob & Co.'s Jacob Arabo. Her reaction? "He has ribbons around it, so I said, 'I think mine's broken'," says Mariah. When he dropped to one knee, "she ran away and got all shy," he says. Finally, she said yes - twice. Cannon, who filmed it all, proposed again to get a perfect take, this time on a helicopter. "That," says Carey, "was beautiful."Congratulations, Mariah! E=MC2 turned gold upon its release in the Philippines. (The album/CD is released in the Philippines by MCA Music Inc.)
Oh, thank you!
You were in the Philippines a few years ago. How did you find it?
Oh, I had an amazing time in the Philippines and I'd love to go back. The crowd at the concert was fun; it was a really, really festive crowd. After the show, I had a chance to go to the beach and that was really beautiful; one of the most beautiful beaches that I've seen in my whole life... and I've been to several of them. I want to thank my fans in the Philippines for their love and support. Please extend my love to all my fans in the Philippines.
Why did you call it E=MC2?
Well, there's a lot of reasons but, you know, it's just fun and having a good time, and "MC" is my nickname... and, you know, there's a lot of different reasons. I like people to interpret it in their own way.
How did the album come to be?
Well, it's just some sort of a combination of different moments, really. It begins with a song called Migrate which has a "dark" kind of a feel; I just love its beat. Everything happens for a reason and E=MC2 is really one album that represents my life right now. It's some kind of a soundtrack of my life.
Of course, "E" in the album's title stands for Emancipation (which happens to be in the title of your immediate past album, also a hit), doesn't it?
Well, I say that sometimes when, you know... As I've said, other people have a different interpretation of the word "E". But really, I think it is sort of like a dose of who I am. You know what I mean - as a person and as an artist. And so, that's what it is. It's kind of like about me.
"Emancipated" from what?
Well, from a lot of things. I mean, I think that as we grow old and we learn more about ourselves, we become a little bit more free. It's difficult to be free if you don't really know where you come from, or if you are not in touch with your feelings. It has taken me a long time to get to that place because, uh, you know, I have gone through rough roads along the way. They've been amazing times, though. Freedom and emancipation and all those good things are really important to me.
You are such a beautiful survivor.
Oh, thank you!
To everybody, most especially your fans, you will forever be the diva.
Oh, I'm very grateful for that. I believe that I owe it to the fact that I'm a person who has a lot of spirituality. I believe in God very strongly but I'm not necessarily a religious person. I have devoted and dedicated fans; I really care about them. Some people that I've met, you know, they see their fans and say, "Oh, 'em people are crazy" Some people have told me that.
So you are in touch with your fans.
Oh yes, I am. When I do a concert, I go down the stage even if my partner would tell me, "MC, don't go down there!" Look, I like being part of the crowd, I like the feeling. It's something different. I know others seldom do that, but I do. I love it when my fans show me clippings of articles about me or books and magazines about me. Getting personal with them is a wonderful experience.
You have gone through so many things. How did you do it? Where do you draw your strength from?
I definitely draw my strength from my personal relationship with God. I've been able to pray my way through tough times and things like that. You know, I think that's important for people to know that everything is possible. You know, no matter what kind of mess you are going through, there's always something bright around the corner. There's always something beautiful.
What inspires you to write songs? Do you write better when you are happy or when you are sad?
You know, I've written some songs when I was really, really sad; and then again, I've written successful songs when I was really, really happy. Some songs I wrote while I was going through difficult times. I wrote some songs that discuss issues that were difficult but that turned out to be something that healed me.
So, music can be a form of therapy as it is with many artists.
Yes, it can be. I do think that music is very therapeutic not just for me, you know, but also for people who listen to it. A song can put lonely people in a good mood, you know.
Would you say that you are happy now more than ever?
Yes, I can say that. This is a very happy time for me. Nothing is ever perfect... there's always something that you have to deal with. You know, things about you that people don't necessarily understand, like artists like me are doing what they do for a living. It's not as if every day is a holiday. I love music and being creative.
You look as smashing as ever. As I've said, you are such a beautiful survivor. How do you keep in shape?
It's just diet and exercise. Boring!
As an equation for surviving, what's the magic "formula" behind E=MC2?
Well, to me it's all about never losing faith in yourself... always believing in yourself. People ask me all the time, "Oh, how could you go on? People were writing you off and treating you like..." whatever it is... "You would never gonna succeed again!" You know what, people looked at me like that before I became famous. So I can't even entertain what other people think. It's about me continuing to make music or whatever the project is. You know, people told me that I could never act again and I was fortunate to make two films which are coming out this year. It's all about faith, about God and never ever giving up.
Obviously, stardom hasn't changed the basic goodness in you.
I still look at myself as the same girl as I was before I joined showbiz. I still remember being a little kid. I often tell myself, "Don't ever forget what it feels like to be a kid." You see, adults misunderstand kids so much that they forget what it is like to be a kid. I still remember when I was struggling and I had only one pair of shoes. The friend I had at that time is the same friend I have today. She and I would sleep together on a mattress on the floor of our Manhattan pad. She used to help me get waitressing jobs. But I was so bad... I was 17 and I was too young to be serving food. I also got fired because I was listening to my Walkman all the time, to my demo tapes. I was a complete mess in that regard.
How was your childhood like?
I grew up in New York... without my mother. She was a former opera singer with the New York Opera and a vocal coach. She was the dominant force in my life because I didn't have my father (an African-Venezuelan; her mom, Irish) around. I saw my father every now and then but it was my mother who raised me. She allowed me to develop my personality from a very young age. She introduced me to all those artistic people. She was a strong-willed woman; she married my father against wishes of her family. That was in the '60s when marrying a black man was a no-no. She eventually separated from my father and married a white man.
What about your school life?
I had fun in school but I also had this feeling that I was different, that I was a mixed-race kid. I was insecure about my looks. It took me a while to get over this feeling. There's a line from one of my songs that says, "I've learned there's an inner peace I own, something of my soul that they cannot possess. I won't be afraid of darkness because there's a light in me that will shine brightly..." and another line from another song, "They can try but they can't take that away from me." Meaning, no matter what anybody says, if you have that power within yourself you get through it. And that's what got me through everything in life because I had a kind of screwed-up childhood.
During our first interview almost a decade ago, I asked you to describe yourself in three words...
...what did I say?
You said you were "workaholic, insecure and optimistic".
Oh, did I say that? (laughs)

HOW WALTER AFANASIEFF WROTE "HERO" WITH MARIAH CAREY
Walter Afanasieff has been widely regarded as a top record producer and songwriter over the past decade. He has produced major hits for Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Kenny G., Michael Bolton, Regina Belle and Savage Garden, and he has won the Grammy Award for "Producer Of The Year". With Mariah Carey, he has co-written such number one hits as "One Sweet Day" (with Boyz II Men) and "My All". But in the wake of the tragic events of September 11, it is his song, "Hero" (also written with Carey), which has probably had the greatest impact.
"Hero" has re-emerged as one of the inspirational, heartfelt songs which have provided comfort and hope to many people during the terrorist crisis. Carey's performance of the song was a focal point of the New York telethon, America: A Tribute To Heroes. In addition, "Hero" is featured on the new charity CD, God Bless America.
"Hero" was written by Afanasieff and Carey in 1992, and was originally conceived as a theme song for the movie, Hero (starring Dustin Hoffman), which would potentially be sung by Gloria Estefan. "I had been asked by Sony's soundtrack division to write and produce the end, title theme for Hero," recalled Afanasieff. "Soon after, when I was in New York working in the studio with Mariah, I suggested we try to write a song for this movie. During a studio break, I was tinkering at the piano, playing the notes that would become the piano intro to Hero. Mariah liked what she heard, and we started writing the song, with the Hero theme in mind. She sang, 'then a hero comes along.' She was truly inspired; the words just flowed out."
It was during this writing session that Sony Music President and COO Tommy Mottola (who was Carey's fiance at the time) came into the studio and heard "Hero". "I told Tommy we were writing a song for this movie," said Afanasieff. "He said, 'Stop, this song is brilliant. We need to save this song for Mariah's album. We decided to keep it for ourselves, and we recorded it for her Music Box album. As for the Hero film, Luther Vandross ultimately wrote and recorded the end title song."
Afanasieff produced "Hero" with Carey, and he performed all of the music tracks. "When I recorded the track, I tried to simulate an orchestral sound with my synthesizers," explained Afanasieff. "There's a huge, timpani roll, a swell of strings, and french horns, which were all done on keyboards. In the back of my mind, I thought we might have an orchestra re-create the string parts. However, when Mariah completed her vocals, she said the recording sounded fine just the way it was, and that we didn't need to bring in an orchestra."
"Hero" was subsequently released as the second single from Music Box, and reached number one on the Billboard "Hot 100" chart on December 25, 1993. It stayed atop the chart for four weeks. Upon its initial release, "Hero" was quickly recognized as an unique, inspirational song. At her Madison Square Garden concert in mid-December 1993, Carey dedicated her performance of "Hero" to the victims and families of a tragic, Long Island train shooting which had occurred on December 7. She also donated proceeds from "Hero" to the victim's families.
Over the years, "Hero" has been regarded as one of Carey's most significant and memorable recordings. "It has become a song which has given a lot of meaning to people in times of despair," said Afanasieff. "Mariah told me she has received thousands of letters from people who were moved and helped by the song. For kids who were messed up on drugs, or were contemplating suicide, the song helped give them hope and strength."
In the wake of September 11 tragedies, the song's impact has risen to a new level. "The events of the world have resulted in certain songs [like Hero] being embraced by people." explained Afanasieff. "Following September 11, everyone involved has truly been a hero. All of the firemen, police and victims were heroes, as well as the military personnel in Afghanistan. We're always going to live in a world where there are tragedies. Everyday someone has to be a hero."

MARIAH MIGHT SCRAP PLANS FOR SECOND WEDDING
Mariah Carey's Big Apple wedding might be off, according to sources close to Carey. The pop diva and her husband, Nick Cannon, hoped to have a lavish celebration that would involve millions of dollars and dozens of bridesmaids. "The small wedding in the Bahamas was nice, but it was not Mariah's style. The lady loves a spectacle," said a source familiar with Mariah's plans. What went wrong? The issue of who was picking up the tab."Mariah was willing to pay for the wedding, but the way she hoped to pay for the wedding was through the sale of photos. No one was interested," the source revealed. That said, Carey and Cannon are still happy and reportedly shopping their way through their first months of marriage. Cannon flew out to Oahu to meet his wife, who was filming a video, but his first order of business was a trip to Macy's at the Waikiki Kahala Mall in search of "his new line of PNB hoodies", according to In Touch.
He also stopped by a local Tiffany & Co., where "he spent time choosing a gift for Mariah and put it in a regular paper bag so he could surprise her."

NICK CANNON WORKING HARD TO KEEP MARIAH CAREY HAPPY
Being married to a diva can't always be easy, but Nick Cannon is doing a good job keeping Mariah Carey happy. While the multi-platinum artist, 39, was hard at work shooting her next music video in Oahu, Hawaii, on June 8, Nick kept busy as well. "He got off the plane and went straight to Macy's in the Waikiki Kahala Mall, looking for his new line of PNB hoodies," an insider tells In Touch.According to the source, "He also picked up some treats at See's Candies for Mariah." Several purchases later, the 27-year-old actor/rapper stopped by Tiffany & Co., where "he spent time choosing a gift for Mariah and put it in a regular paper bag so he could surprise her," says an onlooker.
According to the report, Nick's day ended with a dance party at Mariah's estate. "He arrived at sunset, just in time for the hula dancers' performance, arranged by Mariah," the insider says. Maybe she should dedicate her video, "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time", to her doting new husband. Nick went to Champs Sports and Louis Vuitton after Macy's while Mariah filmed.
After just five weeks (after they met in March for a video shoot) Nick shocked fans when he married Mariah at Carey's estate on the Bahamian island of Eleuthera.

MARIAH HOPES TO HIT HIGH NOTES WITH NEW SCENT
For her second fragrance, Mariah Carey wants her consumers to think pink. Luscious Pink, Carey's second scent with Elizabeth Arden, is intended to show fans a more intimate look into her world.
"This scent is feminine, flirtatious and fun, and truly reflects where I am in my life now, after an incredible year," Carey said earlier this week. To be sure, it's been a whirlwind several months for the singer -- with events including her May marriage to 11-year-younger rapper-actor Nick Cannon and a new album, "E=MC2."
"Elizabeth Arden has been a fantastic partner and the end creation of Luscious Pink is beyond my expectations," continued Carey. "The response from my fans with my debut scent was overwhelming, and I can't wait to see what happens with my second Luscious fragrance."
And Arden feels the same, said Ron Rolleston, executive vice president of global fragrance marketing. "Mariah has been an amazing partner," he said. "She's been engrossed in the fragrance process and marketing from beginning to end. Everywhere she's been, she has shared her first fragrance with her audience. She's done record-setting personal appearances for us. She's been our best ambassador."
Concocted by Carlos Benaim and Loc Dong of International Flavors & Fragrances, Luscious Pink, a sparkling floral, has top notes of Sicilian bergamot, Ocean Breeze accord and sparkling Bellini accord; a heart of Tahitian Tiare petals, lily of the valley and pink peony, and a drydown of bright blond woods, creamy sandalwood and white musk, which the perfumers describe as "a floral melody that is as enveloping as Mariah's voice."
"No one can hit notes any higher than Mariah, and we wanted to use that to inspire us in the creation of the fragrance," added Rolleston.
Luscious Pink's bottle, created by Jean Antretter, senior design director for Arden, is a pink-tinged pearlescent orb topped with Carey's signature butterfly. The outer package is matte pink with the name in metallic pink calligraphy.
The collection includes eaux de parfum sprays in three sizes -- 1 oz. for $39.50, 1.7 oz. for $55 and 3.3 oz. for $65 -- as well as a 6.8-oz. body lotion for $28.
The scent lineup, like Carey's first scent, M, will be sold in about 2,000 U.S. department stores. It will be launched in August. Luscious Pink also will be sold in Japan, and that market's olfactory preferences were kept firmly in mind during the creation process because Carey has "a large consumer base there," said Noreen Dodge, vice president of global fragrance marketing for Elizabeth Arden.
National advertising, shot by Michael Thompson and featuring Carey, breaks in September fashion, beauty and lifestyle magazines, including Cosmopolitan and Glamour. "The campaign has this wonderful ethereal quality which works very well with the concept of the fragrance -- the iridescence from the bottle is carried into the ad," added Rolleston.
More than 15 million scented impressions are targeted, said Dodge, who added that a comprehensive Internet campaign also is planned. "Mariah has a huge fan base and we will reach out directly to them," she said. Point of purchase sampling is scheduled, as well.
While executives declined to discuss sales figures or advertising spending, industry sources estimated that Luscious Pink would do upward of $15 million at retail in its first year on counter. At least $7.5 million is expected to be spent on advertising and sales promotion in the same time frame.

MARIAH CAREY
Mariah Carey is one of those singers whose private problems and public persona are hopelessly entangled. From her rocky marriage to music mogul Tommy Mottola early in her career to her much-reported breakdown in 2001, the superstar crooner has battled her fair share of demons during her time in the spotlight, and these struggles have often surfaced on wax. Her latest outing is no exception; E=MC2 finds the 38-year-old exorcising various ghosts from her past.Unlike 2005's triumphant declaration of independence, The Emancipation of Mimi, the results here are remarkably mixed. MC sounds equal parts defiant and depressed, finding her footing only to lose her way. "Touch My Body", the infectious hit single, is all fun flirtation and sexy seduction. And yet, the lyrics are pure paranoia: "If there's a camera up in here/Then it's gon' leave with me when I do/If there's a camera in here/Then I best not catch this flick on YouTube."
Elsewhere, Mimi delivers a moving ballad to loved ones who have passed away, "Bye Bye"; a gospel-inspired song about loving your enemies, "I Wish You Well"; and a haunting track, "Side Effects", that is widely assumed to be based on her marriage to Mottola. These cuts could have easily crossed over into overly sentimental territory - the type of frothy emotional stuff Mariah has mined in the past - and yet, to her credit, they pack a serious punch.
Unfortunately, the album is also populated by sickly sweet pop confections about addictive, dysfunctional relationships. Mariah often comes off like a lovesick teen - and it's not a good look. (Of course, her curious whirlwind six-week romance and wedding to 27-year-old MTV clown Nick Cannon doesn't do much to counter that impression.) Still, Mariah, as she always does, sings it all out, hitting impossibly high notes along the way.

| Excerpts from the Interview "I like to just record in different places so I went to Capri for a minute, I worked in Florida and I just sing in a place that's good for my voice and so I would just be in a studio singing like I would never go out like, basically, in pajamas singing and just not worry about how I look or whatever else is going on. It's just about having a good time and I did also get a new doggy during the process and his name is JJ. I would say, honestly, the funniest thing was JJ was hitting really, really high notes. He just happens to like when he yawns he hits high notes so I think I might have the only really like high-note-singing dog in the world and we discovered this while making this album." "I think it would be easier to, I mean I only know a few phrases in Japanese, it's not like I'm fluent or even know more than five things to say but I think that I would love to sing something in Japanese. I'm pretty good with like phonetically hearing something and being able to kind of repeat it depending on how much sleep I've had or whatever. Maybe it is my second best language 'cause I've been to Japan a lot of times now but yeah, I think that's a really interesting idea. I would love to do that." "I would just say to my Japanese fans thank you so much for being here for me over the years. I have a very, very special place in my heart for everybody that has been so loyal to me from Japan so, you know, all over the world but there's something very special about my relationship with my Japanese fans so I have to say Arigato and Aishitemasu. [Thank you and I love you]." |

NO BOO-BOO FOR MIMI
It'll take more than that honking diamond ring to throw off Mariah Carey's balance. Although paparazzi snaps taken on the Hawaiian set of the newlywed songbird's new music video, "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time", seem to suggest Carey suffered some kind of injury, a rep for the singer denies that any mishaps took place during the shoot. "Nothing happened," her rep told E! News. "No truth to this at all."The lack of injury didn't seem to stop Nick Cannon from lending a helping hand to his unhurt wife, making him a rather literal hanger-on to his other half. Guess the honeymoon's not over yet.
The Oahu shoot was a last-minute decision for the crooner, as the video was originally scheduled to be filmed in Los Angeles. As is her prerogative, however, Carey changed her mind - and the shooting location - before the production had a chance to kick off.
"She was so excited to be shooting in Hawaii," a source told E! News. "She wanted all her friends to come down and be a part of the shoot." Carey and Cannon arrived in Hawaii after a promotional tour in Japan, where the singer threw out the first pitch at a baseball game in Tokyo.

WEDDING GIFT SHAM
Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon may not have invited friends or family to their secret nuptials, but it hasn't stopped them from demanding wedding gifts. The couple got married in a shotgun union at the E=MC2 songstress' Bahamas pad in April without any guests in attendance. However, according to Page Six, they are still accepting gifts. A source claims: "Mariah's assistant, Gina, sent out over 100 e-mails to her wealthy friends letting them know that she's registered at Bergdorf Goodman if they want to buy her a present. It's odd because she's not even having a big wedding party or anything. It was assumed they'd have a big celebration when they got back, but no. They just want the gifts."
On the list are "fine china, very expensive silver stemware" and other items. What do you think would be a good gift to get Mariah and Nick?

NICK CANNON HITS MONTREAL'S SUPPERCLUB
The stars went up North for the "6th Annual Montreal's F1 Grand Prix" this past weekend. Nick Cannon made a stop at Montreal's premium club "Time Supperclub" for his hosting duties. Although Nick was with his boys, he didn't forget his wifey. He played many songs and remixes of Mariah Carey and even dedicated a song to her. "This one goes out to my wife," recalls a Hollyscoop source.
Time Supperclub is not only hot for it's celeb hosts, but for it's club-goers. It's the one club in Montreal, which is the place to see and be seen. The club lies in the industrial underbelly of downtown Montreal. Supperclub is best known to bring in the most beautiful girls in the city. Don't be suprised if you see the girls dance on it's infamous catwalk to the tabletops.
At this venue you can also have fine dining in a atmosphere that is reminiscent to a club in South Beach with it's red/orange lighting. If ever in Montreal, make sure to stop by Time Supperclub for a night of partying.

Message to Chompoo
"Hi, I'm Mariah Carey. I just wanted to say to Chompoo I'm so sorry to hear about your father. I hope everything's okay and all my heart goes out to you and [I'm] sure everything's gonna be fine and I look forward to seeing you the next time I'm in Thailand."
Excerpts from the Interview
You just got married! Could you tell me how you met your husband Nick Cannon?
"We actually met in 2005 at the Teen Choice Awards. He gave me an award... And we did two videos that day and just didn't finish up the second one which was really what I wanted before, which was, it was a song called 'Love Story' and it's been really sort of become like a thing. So it's nice."
There are a lot of paparazzi. Are you scared of them? What do you think of them? You're so famous."
"I think because of the way that everything's just instant-cash, the media is so quick you know, people are so involved in ripping celebrities to shreds. It's a difficult state of being but for me it's like you take the good with the bad. You have to deal with it. But it is all part of what we do for a living so it's kind of like you asked for it, you got it, here it is and just deal with it. And so all you can hope for you know would be a great supportive group of people around you that will be there and understand on how to get through those moments. That's always what I look for in people. I can always find it but when I do, I really appreciate it."
Could you tell me the secret of your success?
"I feel that everything's possible when you really believe and you really pray and you really put God first and stay focused on what you're doing and don't let anybody steal your joy."
Can you speak about Thailand and say hi to all Thai fans please?
"I did enjoy Thailand and I really love to go back. I'd like to say hello and thank you to all my Thai fans and let you know that I hope to see you soon."

"I'LL BE LOVIN' YOU LONG TIME" VIDEO SHOOT INFO
A day-by-day account of the filming of Mariah's music video to her new single, "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time" in Hawaii by Tim Ryan.Sunday, June 8
Mariah Carey had a busy day. After keeping her production crew waiting some four hours Sunday she finally arrived in Portlock from the Paul Mitchell Estate in Lanikai to shoot a portion of her music video at the cliffside home of Rob Burns who founded the surf company Local Motion. Problem is Carey had a personal trailer waiting for her at the elementary school in Koko Head where she was to have her hair, makeup and costuming done. The diva's makeup and costumes had to be driven to the cliffside location where she was made up. Filming was completed around sunset and Carey was whisked back to Lanikai where she partied with friends until around 11 p.m. She then was driven to Hawaiian Adventures Water Park for more filming. That shoot lasted to 5 a.m.
Monday, June 9
Today's filming is also at night but at Sea Life Park. If the video is not completed today Carey and accompany will return to SLP tomorrow. Husband Nick Cannon, who arrived Saturday evening, stopped by Tiffany's in Waikiki in a limousine and with a bodyguard on his way to Lanikai to buy his bride some jewelry. Notable security company Private Security owned by Charlie Long has had three guards protecting Carey and company during the shoot. The couple have settled into the Kahala Resort for a few days.
Tuesday, June 10
Mariah Carey pulled another all nighter last night at Sea Life Park where she filmed the remainder of her music video until about 4 a.m. The diva arrived just before 5 p.m. in a white gown. Park security made a sweep of the grounds to make sure visitors were out of the park at the 5 p.m. closing time. Despite the security someone caught most of the filming on a hand held HD camera. Part of the video has Carey on the small island in the dolphin pool. Now that the filming is over Carey and her husband Nick Cannon are enjoying a brief honeymoon at the Kahala Resort.

MARIAH CAREY HITS HAWAII
Over the weekend, pop singer/ newlywed Mariah Carey was spotted hard at work in the Island State of Hawaii filming a new music video. And the "Touch My Body" babe looked sexy in her skimpy strapless black two-piece bathing suit and a curly hairdo as she primped in between takes.Mariah's new hubby Nick Cannon was also spotted in Hawaii's capital city of Honolulu, arriving on a plane to meet up with his new wife. And speaking of Cannon, his former fiancé Selita Ebanks recently spoke out regarding Nick's marriage to Mariah. She told press that she is "truly happy" for them, adding, "I think it's amazing when two people find love and they just know. It's a very blissful thing. You can't hate on love."
Given her budding romance with Kanye West, it must be a bit easier for Ebanks to have such an optimistic perspective on love!

MARIAH TO THE SECOND POWER
We all know what pop diva Mariah Carey's first power is: her five-octave vocal range that could raise the ceiling. But, what about her second power? The vocal powerhouse's eleventh and latest studio album "E=MC2", was titled with a play on Einstein's famous mass-energy equivalence formula. The full title of the album expands to "Emancipation equals Mariah Carey to the second power".
And we're making a not-so-wild guess here, but her second "power" could just refer to her songwriting. Not unlike previous albums, the 38-year-old songstress has written or co-written all the songs on her album, and the lyrics might just be powerful and heartfelt enough to trigger tears.
"The album has a lot of ballads and a lot of very personal songs," Mariah told Channel NewsAsia when she was in Japan recently for the MTV Video Music Awards. Perhaps the most personal song would be her second single "Bye Bye", which she wrote after her father passed away from cancer. But the singer also said that the song is universal and is extended to anyone who has lost a loved one.
"A lot of lines in that song are completely personal in terms of my father... I lost my father to cancer" she said. "A lot of my friends have lost people who were very close to them in their lives and they have been with me so in a way I also wrote it for my friends, I wrote it for myself, and I wrote it for whoever who gets the album, listens to the song, gets the message, and needs it.
"The lyrics go 'Everyday life goes on, I wish I could talk to you for a while, I wish I could try to find a way not to cry...' So it's like my regular life is still going on and that's where we keep our act together and make it okay. There are still happy times but there are moments when you reflect on losing people or people you miss and you have to deal with that."
Apart from lost love, Mariah also wrote about new found love. The songbird and her actor beau Nick Cannon were recently married in the Bahamas, and she said tracks on the album reflect their love although they were written before the couple got together.
"I didn't write this album when we were together but it seems like that now so I feel like everything falls into place for a reason," Mariah explained. "There are just some things that are meant to be and I believe in that. I think people have always felt that it's an unrealistic goal to meet someone and really have a true connection with him, but its not. Anything is possible if you believe in it and you really, really have faith. This is how my life has always been, whether it's good times or bad times, things happen for a reason and you get through them in order to get to better places. And that's my philosophy about life."
And the diva is back at the top of the charts, where she belongs. "E=MC2" debuted at first place on the Billboard 200, with more than 463,000 copies sold and making it the biggest opening week sales in her career. The album stayed at at the top spot for two consecutive weeks and first single "Touch My Body" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
"The album is very personal... so to incorporate my name into the title in that way was kind of a wink and a smile," said the singer. "This album is a lot of fun... MC is my nickname so it's kind of like Mariah Carey to the second power. Just jokes, but we might as well have a good time with (the album)."

"SIDE EFFECTS," LA TIMES' 7TH ROMANTIC BUST-UP SONG
These performers have all used their tabloid-worthy exploits as inspiration for something more hummable than humbling.
Mariah Carey
Song: "Side Effects"
Bust-up: Mariah Carey's breakup song is rumored to be about ex-husband Tommy Mottola.
What happened: Carey married music mogul Mottola in 1993. After the couple split, Carey told Parade that Mottola had been unable to handle her success. "I was treated almost like a prisoner. Everybody around me was deathly afraid of him. I became so scared. I was like an obsession and a possession."
Telling lyric: Do my best to handle sleeping with the enemy / Whether he was smothering every last part of me / So I broke away and finally found the strength to leave

Jinny Chang, FTV: How far down the road are you really towards making the kind of music you want?
Mariah Carey: It's kind of like the second part of my life in a way. I don't mean that in terms of years or anything like that. I mean that in terms of my outlook on life and where I'm at just spiritually, emotionally. And just in terms of having fun and allowing that to show in music. There are songs in the album like 'Bye Bye' that you know I feel like even if you're not a fan of mine and you've gone through something you've lost, a family member or a loved one, either they passed away or they're just not in life anymore, songs like that can help you cope.
FTV: Someone like yourself who's been there and done it all in the music industry, what do you think is the prize of fame?
MC: Basically, take pride, rip it up and fill in the trash. Anybody that's in the public eye you lose a certain level of yourself to the outside world.
