SATURDAY 24TH JUNE 2006 ERIK ESTRADA, MARIAH CAREY, JAMIE FOXX TO GET WALK OF FAME STARS

It took a marathon meeting to whittle down 200 nominations to the 23 celebrities who'll get stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame next year.

And after all that work, they ended up with Erik Estrada, of "C.H.I.P.S." Some more recent stars include Jamie Foxx, Mariah Carey, Diddy, Kiefer Sutherland and Matt Damon. Jerry Stiller made the cut, along with the Doors, Lily Tomlin, Tim McGraw, LeAnn Rimes and Shania Twain.

It costs a donation of $15,000 to get a star. First a celebrity has to be nominated. Then the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has to decide they're worthy. Then someone writes the check and promises to keep the star clean forever.

FRIDAY 23RD JUNE 2006 DIVAS THEY FALL

MADONNA reportedly laughed "hysterically" after being told her pop rival Mariah Carey had to cancel several tour dates due to poor ticket sales.

The Hung Up singer is said to have gleefully welcomed the news that Mariah had to shelve a host of US shows because of a lack of interest.

A source told America’s New York Daily News newspaper: "Madonna laughed hysterically. She has been asking her tour promoters to email her Mariah’s sales."

It is believed Madonna still holds a grudge against the Butterfly singer because of something she said in an interview years ago.

The 47-year-old star is believed to be irked that Mariah, 36, once said she "grew up" listening to her music.

However, Madonna’s representative has denied that the two stars are feuding, saying: "She has no negative feelings toward Mariah."

Mariah's spokesperson has refuted reports the singer has cancelled her shows because of a lack of sales.

The representative said: "Her tour is selling well. She’s cancelled a few dates so she can add shows in larger cities."

  • FRIDAY 23RD JUNE 2006 MADONNA DENIES LAUGHING AT MARIAH CAREY

A spokeswoman for Madonna has denied claims that she "laughed hysterically" on hearing news of poor ticket sales for Mariah Carey's upcoming US tour.

The New York Daily News claimed that Madge (oh, we're not supposed to call her that, are we?) has a grudge against Carey due to a contretemps that took place earlier in their respective careers, and cite a source as saying "Madonna laughed hysterically. She has been asking her tour promoters to email her Mariah's sales."

Madonna's spokeswoman, however, said: "She has no negative feelings toward Mariah."

Mariah's meanwhile, says that her tour sales are not remotely risible. "Her tour is selling well," a spokeswoman said, "she's cancelled a few dates so she can add shows in larger cities."

THURSDAY 22ND JUNE 2006 HIDDEN HISTORIES

    New York City’s role
A better knowledge of the complex history of Irish and African-American relations might also ease the way towards more harmonious relations. For example, one relatively underreported local detail is that the Sixth Ward of New York City -- an area that now corresponds to parts of the Lower East Side, Chinatown and Little Italy -- was, on a de facto basis, one of the most racially integrated areas in the country in the mid-19th century.

In his study of the area published in the 1996 book "The New York Irish," historian Graham Hodges wrote:

"By mid century, around the Five Points, necessity obliterated racial differences. George Washington, one of three black men in the city named after the first president, lived with his black wife Adelaide, another black woman, Harriet Morris, and an Irish woman, Joanna Cosgrave. The 1860 census reveals Moses Downey, a 43-year-old black musician, renting space in his home to James and Mary Gallagher, an Irish printer and his wife."

Such details are part of the complex tapestry that makes up Irish and African American history. More contemporary manifestations of that tradition can be seen in the many celebrities who share Irish and black ethnicity, included among them Muhammad Ali (one of whose ancestors came from County Clare), Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, and Eddie Murphy.

  • THURSDAY 22ND JUNE 2006 THE HOTTEST SUMMER TOURS

    3. Mariah Carey: Despite the success of her 2005 comeback, “The Emancipation of Mimi,” it seemed like Carey was never going to tour. With over 5 million copies sold and three more Grammys on her shelf, why bother? For the fans, of course! Mariah -- or Mimi, or whatever the nutty diva is calling herself these days -- hits the road in August. While the “American Idols Live” tour isn’t taking along the show’s judges, Carey is bringing her longtime musical director, Randy “Dawg” Jackson (and maybe some surprise guests). While the set list is secret, expect new hits such as “We Belong Together,” and ‘90s faves such as “Hero.” Plus, in keeping with Carey fashion, lots of questionable clothing choices.

THURSDAY 22ND JUNE 2006 GRAND TOUR VS. NOT SO GRAND?

    Madonna doesn’t forget.

Years ago, Mariah Carey paid Her Madgesty a backhanded compliment by telling an interviewer how she grew up listening to the songs of the 11-years-older star. So, sources claim, it’s no wonder the 47-year-old diva is taking delight in measuring her ticket sales against those of the 36-year-old songbird.

Last week, a spy tells us, Madonna was getting ready to go onstage in Chicago when someone told her Carey had been forced to cancel three tour dates. (Billboard reports that Madge’s "Confessions" tour is on track to gross a record-breaking $200 million.)

"Madonna laughed hysterically," according to a source. "She has been asking her tour promoters to E-mail her Mariah’s numbers!"

Madonna is also said to have been tickled to hear that Carey didn’t appreciate her musical director, "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson, revealing on TV that he’d been inspired by Madonna’s show in L.A.

Madonna’s rep, Liz Rosenberg, argues that Madonna doesn’t give a fig about Carey’s ticket sales — and "she has no negative feelings toward Mariah."

A Carey rep argues, "Her tour is selling really well. She’s canceled a few cities so she can add shows in larger cities. Toronto and Vancouver are sold out. So is her Madison Square Garden show. She’s adding a Jones Beach show Sept. 3."

  • WEDNESDAY 21ST JUNE 2006 MARIAH SUPRISES CROWDS IN L.A.

Mariah Carey takes a break from her tour rehearsal schedule to make unexpected visits to popular Hollywood destinations.

Tourists at Universal Studios Hollywood and the Walk of Fame were treated to an encounter they won't soon forget.

Access Hollywood host Billy Bush "kidnapped" Mariah Carey from the airport, pulling her away from rehearsals for her upcoming tour to visit tourist spots.

Carey, who has more No. 1 singles than any other female artist, was whisked through the screaming crowds at Universal Studios Hollywood by Bush, heading straight for "The Revenge of the Mummy."

"You gotta love a random amusement park stop by," Carey said. "It's like a drive-by amusement park moment."

More fans awaited the pair when Carey's tour bus stopped in front of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, where the pop diva would visit the handprints of her idol Marilyn Munroe.

"I think they knew we were coming," Bush said.

Carey's Pepsi Smash Live show will rock Hollywood's Kodak Theatre next month, while the North American leg of her Adventures of Mimi tour kicks off August 5 in Miami.

WEDNESDAY 21ST JUNE 2006 MARIAH CAREY TO PERFORM IN TUNISIA

American music diva Mariah Carey will be performing in El Menzah Olympic Stadium, Tunis, on July 22-24.

These two concerts will signal the start of the diva’s "Tour of Mimi’s Adventures " after a period of withdrawal from the artistic scene. It will also be the first time Mariah Carey sings in Africa.

During a press conference shedding further light on Mariah Carey’s forthcoming concerts in Tunis, the organizers said that the three time Grammy award winner was delighted to come to Tunisia.

They also emphasized the choice of Tunisia as her first international destination, saying that because of the resonance of her name and talent, they expect the “world’s gaze to be set on Tunisia this summer”.

Giving details about the venue and ticket sales, the organizers said that the event will take place in El Menzah Stadium, a 40,000- seater which has already accommodated Michael Jackson and Sting in the past.

The cost of tickets will range from 35 dinars (about 20 Euros) to 200 dinars (about 120 Euros) for VIP seats and will soon be sold on the internet for international visitors and in youth culture centers throughout the country as of June 12.

They said that they hope to attract 80,000 spectators for the two days.
Many visitors from Europe and from neighboring countries are also expected to come to Tunisia for the event.

Mariah Carey’s “adventures of mimi” Tunisian concerts have already triggered an onslaught of telephone calls from eager fans hoping to see and listen to their idol.

The American pop diva has already sold some 170 million albums in the world and is currently one of the world’s most popular singers after Elvis Presley and the Beatles.

    WEDNESDAY 21ST JUNE 2006 WEIGHT? I DON’T CAREY!

Newly svelte singer Mariah Carey has no idea how much weight she has lost, because she refuses to step on a scale.

The Don’t Forget About Us singer has recently slimmed down and developed her muscles - and she insists she looks so good, her weight is irrelevant.

"I don’t even own a scale,” Mariah mused. “Here’s the deal. Muscle weighs more than fat. So why torture yourself with a scale."

"If your clothes fit you better then you lost some weight."

And the star is baffled when she reads reports commenting on her exact weight, when she herself has no idea what her weight actually is.

"I think they randomly pick a number and go with it," Carey chuckled.

WEDNESDAY 21ST JUNE 2006 DOWNLOAD: ACCESS HOLLYWOOD: THE ADVENTURES OF MIMI & BILLY

After three years off the road, Mariah's come to Hollywood to rehearse for her new tour. But while she clearly has a plan, getting kidnapped at the airport by Access Hollywood's Billy Bush was probably not part of it.

With that, let the adventures of Billy and Mimi begin.

Billy made his way to the airport to greet Mariah as she landed. While she thought she was headed straight to rehearsals for her summer tour, Billy had something a bit more adventurous in mind for the newly svelte Mariah and her pooch Jack. "I hope you are in a flexible mood. We might take a detour – or two," Billy grinned.

She would soon find out that was the understatement of the year as we kidnapped Mariah for an adventure in her tricked-out tour bus. "So I guess this is your ride?" Billy said upon seeing the fully furnished, lavishly decked out vehicle. "This is my temporary home," Mariah said.

The first stop on the misadventure of Mariah – the entertainment capitol of L.A.: Universal Studios Hollywood for the "Mummy" ride of a lifetime. "Does anyone know this woman?" Billy asked the crowd of theme park-goers, eliciting a scream from the fans who immediately recognized Mariah and began snapping photos. "Are they going to come on the roller coaster with us?" Mariah laughed.

Soon, Billy saw what it was like to be a superstar as he found himself swept along on what, for Mariah, is an everyday occurrence – surrounded by eager fans. And as Billy saw, Mariah is truly a giver. She stopped and waved to the fans, even chatting with a few. "You're so beautiful," one young fan yelled. "So are you," Mariah smiled back.

And while getting on the ride, Mariah made the summer (actually make that the life) of an unsuspecting fan, as she sat down right next to a young lady and buckled up. "I'm going to cry," the woman said.

For obvious safety reason, Access Hollywood's cameras couldn't accompany Billy and Mariah on the ride, but their microphone did. "Billy get your hand off my shoulder," Mariah joked. "Sorry honey, I'm scared," he replied.

And after the ride, it was more madness as the two tried to weave their way through an intense crush of fans. "You gotta love a random amusement park stop by, it's like a drive-by amusement park moment," Mariah said. "It's awesome," Billy agreed.

As they make their way back to the bus, it's more hordes of fans to navigate. And after stopping to sign an autograph for a cute little girl, and getting rid of one overly aggressive grown man with a camera, they finally make their way onto the bus. "A success," Billy notes. "A little chaos. A little action. And everyone's in one piece." But little did they know things were just heating up as they headed off to their next stop – the Hollywood Walk of Fame for a little star gazing.

And sure enough, once again, the fans took notice of who was there right away. "I think they knew we were coming," Billy said, as they stepped foot off of the bus and onto the sidewalk. "It looks like a few of your closest friends are here to say hello."

Try thousands of friends, all cramming the sidewalk to catch a glimpse and take a photo with Mariah. Then, Billy unveiled his next surprise. "We are taking you somewhere very special," he told her. "Ok, what are we doing?" Mariah wondered. "Your idol is Marilyn Monroe," Billy said. "Yes. I'm a very big fan of hers," Mariah confirmed. "Well, we are going to pay tribute and visit her foot and hand prints on the Walk of Fame," Billy revealed. "Oh get out of here! I've never been there before," she beamed.

As they made their way to Marilyn's famous prints, Mariah was curious to see if hers matched up. "Let's see if they match," Billy suggested. "They definitely don't match because I think my feet are bigger," she laughed.

As far as her hands? "I'm afraid to bend over. There are a few too many people here," she joked. "Am I the greatest date or what?" Billy asked. "Aww Billy, nobody else does this," she smiled. "He is the best date ever."

But alas, it was finally time to drop Mariah off at the sound stage for her tour rehearsals. "That was very fun," Mariah told Billy. "The adventures of Mimi and Billy are over and now let the adventures of Mimi begin," he said.

"Alright good. I've got to get focused to go on tour but I thank you for my adventure with Billy," she smiled to the camera. "Nobody else does this but you, so I thank you."

WEDNESDAY 21ST JUNE 2006 MADONNA CACKLES WITH DELIGHT AT MARIAHS MISFORTUNE

Mariah Carey once said that she grew up listening to the songs of Madonna, which apparently irked the Material Girl, given that Carey is only 11 years younger than she is.

Madonna still holds a grudge: According to Rush & Molloy, Madge was preparing to go onstage during a tour stop in Chicago when she was told that Carey had to cancel three tour dates on account of low ticket sales. "Madonna laughed hysterically," said a source. "She has been asking her tour promoters to E-mail her Mariah’s numbers!"

What’s more, Madonna is taking a somewhat sadistic pleasure in hearing that Carey was miffed that "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson said that he’d been "inspired" by Madonna’s LA show. The elder pop queen’s rep says there’s no feud: "She has no negative feelings toward Mariah." Mariah’s rep adds that a few cities were cancelled so that she could "add shows in larger cities."

WEDNESDAY 21ST JUNE 2006 VANDROSS "ULTIMATE" COMEBACK

For Luther Vandross, there’s shelf-life after death.

Slightly more than a year after his passing, a trio of record labels are teaming together to issue some previously unreleased songs by the velvet-voiced singer.

The two tracks, "Shine" and "Got You Home," will be among the selections on the 18-song The Ultimate Luther Vandross. The posthumous compilation is the brainchild of J, Epic and Legacy Records, the three labels Vandross worked with over the span of his Grammy-winning career and which collectively hold the rights to his most memorable tracks.

The career-spanning album will include "Here and Now," "Power of Love/Love Power" and "Dance with My Father," the number one single off Vandross’ final multiplatinum studio album and a Grammy winner for Song of the Year.

The collection will also feature two duets: "The Closer I Get To You," with Beyoncé Knowles, which also earned the twosome a Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals; and "Endless Love," his 1994 million-selling duet with Mariah Carey.

"Shine," produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, is the first single and is in rotation at several stations.

Vandross, who sold more 30 million records, died July 1, 2005, two years after suffering a debilitating 2003 stroke from which he never fully recovered. He was 54.

The Ultimate Luther Vandross collection hits stores Aug. 22.

    WEDNESDAY 21ST JUNE 2006 HIP-POP REDUX

Nelly Furtado’s not the first pop diva to embark on a lucrative hip-hop detour. Neither is there anything new about white singers appropriating black culture and music. But in the era of sampling and the DJ remix, reinterpretations and collaborations take on new meaning. One hand washes the other, whether it’s Deborah Harry exposing Blondie’s new-wave audience to the sounds of New York street rap two decades ago in “Rapture” or Gwen Stefani hiring the best of West and East Coast hip-hop production talent for her 2004 solo albumLove, Angel, Music, Baby (Interscope) and its spinoff “Hollaback Girl.” Hip-hop dictates practically every mainstream single these days, and often in the most subtle of ways. Boom-bap beats, sampling, and an entire production æsthetic have been adopted from hip-hop by rock, R&B, and even country artists. So don’t be surprised if that next Loretta Lynn single sounds oddly like Ou tK ast. Here’s a little history of the game . . .

Mariah Carey, “Fantasy” - Building on a sample of the Tom Tom Club’s “Genius of Love,” dynamo pop vocalist Mariah Carey proved she was prescient back in the mid ’90s with “Fantasy” (from her sixth album, Daydream ) and its follow-up remix by Wu Tang Clan’s now deceased Ol’ Dirty Bastard. Mariah’s vocals and the bubblegummy Tom Tom sample drive the single; Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s odd rantings take the remix to the hip-hop masses.

WEDNESDAY 21ST JUNE 2006 SCAM CLAIMS MARIAH CAREY PERFORMANCE

What seemed like a fun event for a good cause turned out to be a scam.

An organization out of Greensboro claimed star Mariah Carey was coming to the Triad to perform at a charity event.

Matt Cecil was among those buying tickets to see Carey at Club Odyssey in Winston-Salem. He said he bought four tickets after learning of the event from a flyer posted at the club.

The flyer said "United Talented People of Pride" and it claimed Carey would perform at a breast cancer benefit at the club.

Cecil said he paid $30 each for the tickets.

Club Odyssey tried calling the group, as did WXII 12 News. But its numbers were disconnected and the organization’s Web site no longer exists.

The people who bought tickets were left high and dry.

Cecil said he doesn’t hold the club responsible for the scam. The Better Business Bureau has no record of "United Talented People of Pride."

WEDNESDAY 21ST JUNE 2006 CAREY MAKES UP FOR SHODDY SHOES WITH ELABORATE COLLECTION

Mariah Carey insists she only has a vast shoe collection to compensate for only owning one pair of old, ragged shoes while she was trying to get her big break.

The We Belong Together singer now has a massive room that has been specially fitted out to house the collection - and she believes she has earned it. She explains, "When I was struggling before I got my record deal, I used to walk to work and I had one pair of shoes."

"They had holes in the bottom and it was like this year when it was really snowy in New York." "I was like, `I vow I will always have more than one pair of shoes!’ So I think it stems from that a little bit!"

WEDNESDAY 21ST JUNE 2006 MARIAH REFUSES TO STEP ON SCALE

Newly svelte singer Mariah Carey has no idea how much weight she has lost, because she refuses to step on a scale. The Don’t Forget About Us singer has recently slimmed down and developed her muscles - and she insists she looks so good, her weight is irrelevant.

She explains, "I don’t even own a scale. Here’s the deal. Muscle weighs more than fat. So why torture yourself with a scale?"

"If your clothes fit you better then you lost some weight."

And the star is baffled when she reads reports commenting on her exact weight, when she herself has no idea what her weight actually is. She adds, "I think they randomly pick a number and go with it."

TUESDAY 20TH JUNE 2006 THE EMANCIPATION OF BILLY BUSH

My adventures with Mariah Carey begin tonight. I picked her up at the airport recently... she’s here for a month to rehearse for her upcoming U.S. tour with her musical director, Randy Jackson. I am pleased to report she’s "on" and I think more great things are coming for and from her.

I have done several shoots with Mariah. When I first made her aquaintance, she was in her "slump." "Glitter" had bombed in the U.S. and "Charmbracelet" after it didn’t fare much better.

My impression was that she was over-handled: people in the camp were nervous about the future and that made her generally uptight. Well, she turned things around, and I think she did it by finally shedding the last holds that her former husband had on her. Used to following direction about "what people want," she began making music she loved.

"The Emancipation of Mimi," the top album of 2005 by most barometric measures, has led to "The Adventures of Mimi," a U.S. tour that starts August 5th in Miami.

So I hijacked her when she landed and we went to Universal Studios, rode a rollercoaster, then went to the Walk of Fame and gave tourists what they never see when they hit Hollywood Boulevard: a huge star! She was loose, willing to "go with it"... the crowd went crazy and it was a blast.

Mariah is fun, really funny and self-deprecating - and thanks to her "morsel diet" (sinful foods allowed, but only a forkful), she’s looking strong. Tune in. She’s a new girl.

The show airs tonight, so make sure you check out your local listing. Don’t miss it!

TUESDAY 20TH JUNE 2006 HELP BRING MARIAH TO SOUTH AFRICA!

Wouldn't it be great if we supported our local artists as much as we support international ones! Just picture it: "Help bring Wonderboom to Hotazel", "Help Bring PitchBlack back" And so on. In the second of our series of SA-based sites that petition international artists to visit SA, the focus falls to... MARIAH!

*To see the first Represent fanclub article featuring the U2 fan club click here.*

We must admit, we loved her in the 90's *blush*, but we've kind of outgrown her.
    Clearly that's just us.
Appears that the Mariah fan site has all kinds of juicy goodies on SA fans - like Mariah fan get togethers.... see above photo of some fans singing her songs Karoke style! :)

They also have an article on one of the "1st South African fans to meet or see Mariah Carey up close", a woman called Lynette who shares her experience online with all the fans:

You will never guess what - I SAW MARIAH !!!!!!!!!!!!! I subscribe to the "Mariah Live" mailing list and got a chance to be in her new music video "Bringin' on the heartbreak" ! The video is shot as part of a rock concert, so we got to be fans in the crowd at her concert for the video! And it was free. I was so anxious with anticipation - the thought of just getting to see in person was overwhelming me. I couldn't believe that I was going to get this chance.

So a friend of mine and I got there at 5:30pm and we waited outside for 2 hours before we went inside, then waited again till eventually she came out. She was stunning. She just had to wave and the crowd went mad. I'll never forget that feeling when I got my first glimpse of her. The crowd went wild and the screams were deafening. It was so exciting - I was jumping up and down :) It was like I was the only one in the auditorium and no one was watching me going crazy :) I couldn't take my eyes off her. We were like 12 rows from the front, then there was a section for the cameras and then the stage. I was so excited that I was a mere 15 meters from Mariah! Then she was being interviewed by different tv channels and then came on stage and said she's gonna change for the video shoot and will be back. We waited so long while the crew setup the lighting and cameras. There is such a lot of work involved in making the video.

    And so on.

Click here to go to the site - come on closet fans, join the gang!

We wish them luck and will definitely let them know if we know before them when their diva hits town. Somehow we think they may know first.

TUESDAY 20TH JUNE 2006 MARIAH CAREY IN 'PEG SEPT. 19

Prepare to be emancipated. Multi-octave pop diva Mariah Carey, touring in support of her Grammy-winning comeback album The Emancipation Of Mimi, will play a show at the MTS Centre on Tuesday, Sept. 19, it was announced yesterday.

The best-selling female performer of the 1990s, Carey outdid rivals Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey by sharing writing credits on the bulk of her material, from breakout single Vision Of Love in 1990 to the poorly-received Charmbracelet album in 2002.

Of course, Carey has always been known as much for her escapades outside the studio as in, marrying Columbia Records head Tommy Mottola in 1993, divorcing him four years later and then suffering a very public breakdown in 2001, the same year she appeared in the universally-panned movie Glitter.

Luckily, all that funny business appears to be behind her. The Mimi album picked up three Grammys this year, putting Carey back on top of the R&B heap.

Tickets for the September show go on sale this Saturday at 10 a.m., and are available at the MTS Centre box office, all Ticketmaster outlets (www.ticketmaster.ca or 780-3333) or www.livenation.com.

    They're selling for $19, $69.50, $89.50, $109.50 or $139.50 plus service charges.

TUESDAY 20TH JUNE 2006 CAN YOU SURVIVE THE FLOUNDERING OF THE MUSIC INDUSTRY?

Now wait a minute, didn't Mariah Carey sell well over 50 million albums since 1990? (Strictly speaking in the dollar terms, that's roughly 649 million dollars in album sales alone.) And wasn't she one of the hottest acts in the past decade and in the exclusive Top Ten All Time Artist who have the most consecutive #1 hits?

Okay, so she's not married to the head of Sony Records any more and who cares that she had an emotional breakdown (who wouldn't with the kind of pressure she has to deal with - I think I'd like to have a breakdown now!) - She's considered a liability? When her contract was reportedly worth an estimated 80 million dollars and trouble looming over an already unsteady economy, which has hit the music industry over the past several year in declining sales, especially since the tragic events that occurred on September 11th, it's no wonder the "ax" would fall on those with huge salaries.

With sales from her first release on Virgin/EMI only reaching 400,000 when it was released, this album has been a disappointment to record company execs as I am sure it was to Ms. Carey who has always been at the top of the charts until now. But doesn't everyone have a bad hair day? Of course, but not to the tune (excuse the pun) of 25 million dollars which is what Ms. Carey was reportedly paid for the first release, "Glitter" on her old label. Now mind you, I would love to make that kind of money, and hats off to Ms. Carey's people for negotiating that kind of deal, but the risk one takes in being the highest paid, is that you are usually the first one to go when times are tough.

While Ms. Carey might have had an easier time with her old label because of loyalty to her and the huge profits she has generated and still does for them, this brand new label had nothing but dollar signs and no loyalty to her financially. Hopefully, Alain Levy who replaced Ken Berry will be able to renegotiate Ms. Carey's contract instead of letting her go.

This was and still is today definitely yet another wake up call in an already floundering industry. With Record Companies going down and out and hanging out their shingles right and left (DreamWorks being the latest). Executives being fired here, there and everywhere. Artists trying to duck for cover so they aren't the next casualty; it's a scary proposition being a musician. Okay, so it's always been a scary proposition.

So I ponder, why are things so much worse then they used to be? Could it be that too much money is being paid at the top? Is there not enough promotion? Is there too much shifting and leveraging to get the best deal? Is the quality of the product not meeting the demands of the populace? Bingo! With the fragile state of this and so many other industries, 1 hit wonders mentality must go if the recording industry wants to not just survive, but thrive. (Ms. Carey does not fall into this category; other then they are trying to find the next Mariah Carey.) Quality, not quantity. The industry needs to stop the mass cookie cutter attitude by trying to produce the same acts with different people in them over and over again. It's like eating the same meal at different restaurants night after night. Different chefs, the same recipe, but none of the meals were as good as the first taste you had at your favorite restaurant. If you keep churning out the same act with different faces, eventually the fans will get tired of the original acts also and stop buying even their product.

Change is a good thing and new acts come up all the time, but change is not good when it is constantly happening and no one knows which end is up. The industry needs some stability and consistency, not only in the ranks, but also with the artists. Too many artists are pulled off the shelves before they even get off the ground, leaving the listening audiences confused and disgruntled. The labels have forgotten the fans and is only worrying about paying their costly mortgages, thereby losing all loyalty from the paying public.

If the audience is not happy, they won't buy the product. In addition, we seem to be seeing even in the bigger named artists, with only 1 song released off their albums to the listening public. Not many people want or can afford to buy an album for $11.98 with only 1 song they like on it anymore, even if they are loyal fans of the established artist. The general population is the ones who are suffering the most in this economy.

If there is little or no money coming in, then the day of the big contracts is gone. Some of the largest selling albums are ones with multiple songs on it that the listener likes. Take Shania Twain for example. Her albums are mega sellers with more then 1/2 the album on the singles charts at various times. Why are her albums huge? Because they are quality, and a great bargain. The buying populace wants a deal. The Record Industry seems to want to put out a little and expect to get a lot, and in doing so, they are losing the fan base in general. People are spending their money elsewhere.

They forgot that we are the fans and the fans have the buying power. Without the buying power, they lose their jobs, the big deals go away, and the labels go under. They need to stick with the artists once they have signed them, promote them, and if the first album doesn't work, try another one and work harder with a different strategy. Forget trying to get another Mariah Carey, N-Sync, or Shania Twain.

Use the talent that is there and churn out more then a 1 hit wonder. Then the buying public will come back and the fan base will be there for hopefully years to come. Look at acts like the Beatles, Garth Brooks, Elvis Presley, ABBA and Barbara Streisand to name a few. These acts stir the general public, and very few people have not heard of them. They still sell records and when they do a concert, it's sold out in a second. This is because of quality. They weren't churned out and then spit out.

Let's take ABBA for example. This is a group based in the 70's, and they haven't had a hit record in decades. They are also one of the biggest selling groups of all times, still selling albums today. Recently, they were offered a billion dollars to tour for one year. The turned it down (wish I could do that!). While that is a contradiction of what I said about those with the largest pay being cut first, it is in line with what I have been trying to say here all along - the bottom line is the fan base. If it's not there, the money will not come in, and it can't be there with a 1 hit wonder. Too much spending, and not enough quality product has caused the music industry to come crashing down to reality.

A little side note on Ms. Carey. I do wish all the success on her new CD (and it looks like she's hitting the top). She certainly deserves it. She has worked hard and worked smart for the most part and has earned the right to a deal of the magnitude she received. Jaci Rae's grit and determination brought her from a poor childhood to a successful singer and performer who tours around the world. She is the recipient of the "Female Vocalist of the Year" award at the Golden Music Awards in Nashville, as well as a Barnes and Noble and Amazon #1 Best seller.

    TUESDAY 20TH JUNE 2006 IT’S LIKE THAT

It’s official, we’ve entered an era where it’s no longer cool to be a diva with a list of demands as long as a U2 gig queue. Mariah Carey has poo-poo’d claims that she had a member of staff just to hold her drinks.

The claims followed a pic of Mazza being offered a sip of a drink held by someone else. You can see where the confusion lay, can’t you?

Anyway, she told Contactmusic.com: "That is so, ugh...I was at a record signing and I signed about 3,000 records. Most artists will go for maybe half an hour, then they leave everybody standing there. I always feel guilty doing that, so I stay for a long time."

"I’m signing with one hand and shaking somebody else’s hand, so someone tapped me to take a sip of water, and then they took a picture. But believe me, I’d much rather hold my own glass! I can’t even get a proper assistant, how am I gonna get a cup-holder?"

Well that’s gotta be music to the ears of one certain assistant, eh?

TUESDAY 20TH JUNE 2006 MARIAH AT "JAY LENO" TAPING

Mariah was in Los Angeles today to tape her interview on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno." Fans at the studio saw her arrive at 4:05pm, where she greeted them briefly and promised to come back out after the taping, as she was running late for the taping at 4:00pm.

Fans who were waiting outside saw the tour bus leave at around 4:45pm without Mariah. Following her appearance on the "Tonight Show," Mariah stayed on for an exclusive interview with Access Hollywood (note that earlier reports point towards a sneak peek inside Mariah's tour bus). Mariah, true to her word, came back outside around 6:30pm where she greeted fans and treated them to autographs before leaving in a private car.

TUESDAY 20TH JUNE 2006 JERMAINE DUPRI PROMISES MARIAH, JANET DUET ON NEW ALBUM

"I got a mean idea, so look for it," JD says about planned duet on Jackson’s 20 Years Old.

Earlier this month, Jermaine Dupri demonstrated he’s a true showman by bringing out Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson during his set at the Summer Jam radio festival in New Jersey. Now, Dupri is thinking about how to pull the ultimate trump card and get the two legends on the same song.

In April, Carey hinted that she was very open to the collaboration. "He never talked to me about that, but if Jermaine has a concept, we should go and write something," she told MTV Radio. "I love Janet. I§ve been a big fan of Janet since "Con-tro-ol!"

On Friday, JD said he is, in fact, developing an idea for Carey and his longtime girlfriend to do it up right on a song.

"It’s gonna happen on this record," he said about the collaboration. "Please believe that. I got a mean idea, so look for it. We definitely gonna do a repackage on [Janet’s 20 Years Old] once it comes out. Hopefully it’s successful and people buy into it, then I§m going back in the studio.

What happened was, when I was working with Janet, I got into the zone. This was my first time ever working with her. When I get into my zone with artists, I just want to create and create and create. That’s what happened with me and Mariah [on The Emancipation of Mimi]. We don’t run outta ideas; we keep coming up with sh--. The closer I get to that idea [for Janet and Mariah], the more I know where it should be at. It’s feeling like it§s gonna happen."

Dupri also said the Janet and Mariah record — if he pulls it off — could appear on the initial run of 20 Years Old.

"It depends on how quick my mind moves," he said. "We’re mixing records for [20 Years Old]. We’re not done yet. When I did Usher’s My Way album, the last record I created was §You Make Me Wanna ... .§ I§m thinking I might go back in, and I might tamper with it. ... We gotta try to figure it out."

JD hopes to have the Janet and Mariah duet mapped out and recorded before Carey goes on tour this summer. Dupri also said he’s accepted Mariah’s invite to go out on the road with her. He won’t be at every single date, but he promises to pop up here and there and support his homie.

"I’mma go to the hot spots," he said of the tour. "She’s going to Miami first. I’m definitely gonna be at that show. I’m definitely gonna be in New York, in Atlanta. That’s my partner. Whatever she needs me to do, I’m there."

When he’s not onstage, Jermaine already has a full plate of production scheduled for the rest of the year. He’s working on a slew of his So So Def artists, including Johnta Austin, Manish Man, T. Waters and Young Capone. Bow Wow’s next album is on Dupri’s to-do list, as are records from 3LW, JoJo, Ludacris, Young Jeezy, Frankie J, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Nelly, Usher ("We gonna start on his record at the end of the year") and Mariah Carey once she gets off tour.

  • MONDAY 19TH JUNE 2006 STAR JONES DEFENDS MARIAH’S BLACKNESS ON

Comic Sandra Bernhard ran into brick wall trying to rehash her old ‘Mimi’ joke

Star Jones Reynolds had to bite her tongue to keep from cursing out comedian Sandra Bernhard on “The View” Friday morning.

Bernhard has made jokes in the past about biracial singer Mariah Carey appearing to cash in on her blackness only when her more mainstream pop material became passé. Star, reading from the pre-interview notes on her blue cards, asked Bernhard to explain why she is now claiming responsibility for the success of Carey’s album, “The Emancipation of Mimi.”

Bernhard said it was her jokes eight years ago about Carey “being black only when it’s convenient” that led to the singer’s nervous breakdown, which eventually resulted in this current emancipation.

Trying to remain calm, Star hit Bernhard with a “girl please” and said Carey has always been open about being black. Bernhard joked to the audience that Star was about to go off on her. Star smiled and said, “I look too cute today to be going off on you,” then rolled her eyes back toward co-host Barbara Walters to continue on.

Walters said that Carey spoke openly about her African American father during their interview eight years ago. Bernhard finally gave up on the whole thing, shouting, “It’s a joke,” and telling Star she didn’t set up the story right.”

Of course the entire 7:28 minute segment was on You Tube within seconds. “View” it here.

SUNDAY 18TH JUNE 2006 BONSOIR TO FRANCE SOIR AS IT HITS THE STREETS AGAIN

JASON Fraser, one of Britain’s most famous media photographers, must be pleased with the reaction to the relaunch of France Soir, one of France’s most famous newspapers. He had a lot to do with its triumphant reappearance last week on French news-stands.

The paper, founded by Pierre Lazareff in 1943 as Defence de la France, the paper of the French Resistance, once enjoyed a six figure circulation, but recent years have not been kind to this grand old dame as losses mounted and sales declined.

The paper had not appeared since property developer Jean-Pierre Brunois took it over in April. He hired French-speaking Fraser to redesign it and help relaunch the paper which now looks a bit like a Sun clone.

The launch edition carried a big front page picture of singer Mariah Carey (doing nothing more dramatic than sipping a coffee) followed by a two page interview Fraser did with the femme fatale of the pop world. Hardly earth-shattering stuff. But getting it back on the streets was a minor miracle.

Brunois’s ownership caused much angst among staff. Morale nosedived. The many job cuts sparked a minor French revolution with departing staff alleged to have deliberately introduced computer viruses, destroyed office equipment and indulged in some unreportable obscenities.

Not surprisingly, given Fraser’s influence, the new-look France Soir, is picture-led with less emphasis on good writing, which was one of the paper’s strengths in its former glory days. But it has been well received.

The Boyzone and Girls Aloud mastermind says the Irish cutie totally slipped under his gaydar. "I didn`t know he was gay at all. I swear to God. I had no idea Stephen Gately was gay either. Mark told me he liked Eurovision and Mariah Carey so that was the biggest giveaway ever."

The X Factor judge added that it`s his dream to live Madonna`s life for a day. "I`d love to know what really goes on inside her head." So would we, Louis.

  • SATURDAY 17TH JUNE 2006 CAREY: 'I DON'T NEED HELP DRINKING WATER'

Pop superstar MARIAH CAREY has laughed off reports she ordered an assistant help her drink water at a recent album signing.
During the London event, the WE BELONG TOGETHER singer was photographed drinking water from a glass held up to her mouth by an employee.
The 36-year-old says, "That is so, ugh...I was at a record signing and I signed about 3,000 records. Most artists will go for maybe half and hour, then they leave everybody standing there.
"I always feel guilty doing that, so I stay for a long time. I'm signing with one hand and shaking somebody else's hand, so someone tapped me to take a sip of water, and then they took a picture.
"But believe me, I'd much rather hold my own glass! I can't even get a proper assistant, how am I gonna get a cup-holder?"

SATURDAY 17TH JUNE 2006 MARIAH CAREY: NOTHING ABOUT DUETTING WITH HOUSTON

When I knew her, she was really fun and cool and just one of the most talented people in the world, so, of course, I support her, but I would never say she's going through a hard time because she never told me that", said Mariah, according to Handbag.com.

FRIDAY 16TH JUNE 2006 CRISTAL EXEC COMMENTS ON HIP HOP CONNECTION

The managing director of Cristal champagne is scratching his head over the product’s heavy presence in hip hop.

The expensive beverage was the 8th most mentioned brand on Billboard’s Top 100 chart in 2005 with 35 namedrops, according to AmericanBrandstand.com. The company, however, views its embrace by the hip hop community with "curiosity and serenity."

In a special edition of The Economist Magazine, the managing director of Louis Roderer Cristal described the rap community’s promotion of the drink as “unwelcome attention.”

“What can we do?” said managing director Frédéric Rouzaud in the article titled Bubbles & Bling. “We can’t forbid people from buying it. I§m sure Dom Perignon or Krug would be delighted to have their business."

The brand has been mentioned in songs by such artists as Jay-Z, Kanye West, Trina, Lloyd Banks, The Game and Mariah Carey.

WEDNESDAY 14TH JUNE 2006 MARIAH DONS AN APRON FOR NEXT MOVIE ROLE

New York - Mariah Carey can point to yet another person who didn't see Glitter: the director of her new movie.

Carey will play a waitress in Tennessee, directed by Lee Daniels, producer of The Woodsman and Monster's Ball.

"He's a risk-taker," Carey told Time for its issue on news-stands on Monday. "Obviously it would be a risk in a lot of people's minds to cast me."

Carey's The Emancipation Of Mimi was the best-selling album of 2005, helping to bury the pain of the 2001 film and soundtrack flop Glitter and her breakdown from exhaustion.

But with a tour under way, she is still busy. And she's keeping a sense of humour.

"I got a letter from a girl who said she was listening to one of my songs and every time I hit a particular high note, the garage door would open or close," she said.

The 36-year-old hopes doors continue opening for her.

"There will always be parts of me that need emancipating," she said. "But it feels nice to allow yourself to be who you are." - Sapa-AP

WEDNESDAY 14TH JUNE 2006 CAREY LAUGHS OFF HOUSTON DUET RUMOURS

Mariah Carey has rebuffed speculation she plans to record a duet with Whitney Houston, in a bid to reignite the troubled singer’s career.

Houston has been dogged by reports questioning her health and alleged drug use in recent months, but Carey insists she is not aware the I Will Always Love You star is experiencing any problems.

She says, "I did not say (we§d record this duet), because to me that sounds like I’m saying she has a problem, and I wouldn§t say that. I haven’t spoken to Whitney in a long time.

"When I knew her, she was really fun and cool and just one of the most talented people in the world, so, of course, I support her, but I would never say she’s going through a hard time because she never told me that."

WEDNESDAY 14TH JUNE 2006 OFF THE RECORD

THERE seems no end to Mariah Carey’s talents. Her five-octave vocal range is the envy of many of her rivals. And it seems to have a peculiar effect on some of her fans. "I got a letter from a girl who said she was listening to one of my songs," she revealed in an interview, "and every time I hit a particular high note, the garage door would open or close."

That’s a heck of a skill, and one that she should develop further. So much neater than a remote control for those up-and-over garage doors. As long as she provides her chauffeur with those industrial-strength ear protectors, of course.

WEDNESDAY 14TH JUNE 2006 EXCESS ALL AREAS: ROCKS TOP 50 BIG SPENDERS

Splashing the cash is as much a part of the rock`n’roll lifestyle as picking up a guitar. But it’s not just how much you spend - it’s what you spend it on. From his`n’her gold teeth to a guest appearance by Marlon Brando, we point the fickle finger of pop at the tasteless, the shameless and the downright ludicrous:

    40 Key purchase: Mariah Carey
    Item: Marilyn Monroe’s piano, Cost: $662,500 (£397,000)

When Christie’s sold Monroe’s possessions in 1999, the third-priciest item turned out to be her white baby grand, bought by an anonymous buyer - who turned out to be fellow vixen Mariah Carey.

    WEDNESDAY 14TH JUNE 2006 CELEBS SHOW OUT AT REID’S 50TH B-DAY BASH

The night before the Tony Awards in New York, newest Broadway darling Oprah Winfrey and her crew (Gayle) hit up the big celebrity-filled birthday bash of Island Def Jam chairman L.A. Reid at Nobu 57 and partied until 2:30 a.m.

As for other stars in attendance, Mariah Carey reportedly arrived two hours late, but right before the party was scheduled to start.

Looking crisp and clean in his sea green, Jigga and his girl Beyonce hit the dance floor when fellow guest Lionel Richie began crooning “Easy (Like Sunday Morning).” Page Six also reports that John Legend “swayed with the crowd” and Carey danced with, who else, her manager Benny Medina.

WEDNESDAY 14TH JUNE 2006 TUNED OUT OF RADIO?

For every Dixie Chicks dilemma, there’s a comeback story that goes against the odds and beats critics’ expectations. Take the 2005 comeback of Mariah Carey, the singer who was a major act in the 1990s and suffered a few setbacks since 2001.

"Mariah Carey was out of favor and not getting real feedback," said Tex Meyer, market manager/general manager for Clear Channel Radio in the Roanoke/Lynchburg market.

However, with the release of the multiplatinum "The Emanicipation of Mimi" and its singles including "We Belong Together," Carey, whose album shipped more than 6 million units, rebounded and resumed her hit-making status and radio appeal, he said.

  • TUESDAY 13TH JUNE 2006 A "DEF JAM" DIET?

Music's A-listers were on hand to celebrate L.A. Reid's 50th birthday at Nobu 57 in New York City, July 11th.

There was Jay-Z, looking so slim some started whispering about a "Def Jam Diet." One partier noted, "L.A. has lost a lot of weight. So has Jay, Jay's girlfriend Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, Reid's p.r. woman Laura Swanson and Def Jam publicist Jana Fleischman. It's amazing. It's like a whole new skinny company."

Jay-Z took to the dance floor with Beyoncé as Lionel Richie sang "Easy (Like Sunday Morning)." John Legend swayed with the crowd, and Carey, who arrived two hours late, danced with manager Benny Medina.

Other attendees included Oprah Winfrey, Clive Davis, Usher, Babyface, Alicia Keys, Avril Lavigne, Ciara, Kelly Rowland, Serena Williams, Rihanna, Janet Jackson and Jermaine Dupri, and Sean Combs who all danced until 4am.
