50 GREATEST DUETS · JANUARY 17TH, 2007 SOURCE: VIBE MAGAZINE/HEROES OF MARIAH |
|
|
Mariah is featured twice in Vibes’s "50 Greatest Duets of All Time" :
No.13 - "Fantasy" Mariah Carey and Ol’ Dirty Bastard
The Backstory: It wasn’t until beauty Mariah Carey found the lyrical beast that her career reached ridiculous heights. "Fantasy" shipped Mariah to the `hood. It also brought ODB into suburban girls’ bedrooms.
Key Moment: The pinnacle comes when Mr. Brooklyn Zoo proclaims, "Me and Mariah / Go back like babies with pacifiers."
No.30 - "I’ll Be There" Mariah Carey and Trey Lorenz
The Backstory: A number one hit on the pop single chart for the Jackson 5 in 1970, it was a vocal showcase for a then 12-year-old Michael. Carey ambitiously updated the song, sharing duties with backup singer Lorenz.
Key Moment: Mariah’s got five octaves, but when Lorenz dives into his verse with exultant "Oh’s" and the backing choir follows his lead, it sets the song in motion.

BLING KING CALLS STARS FOR TRIAL · JANUARY 17TH, 2007 SOURCE: NEW YORK POST |
|
|
JEWELER to the stars Jacob Arabov is calling on his celebrity clients to testify as defense witnesses at his upcoming federal money-laundering trial.
Rappers Sean "Diddy" Combs and Jay-Z, songstress Mariah Carey and Los Angeles-bound soccer great David Beckham top the list of witnesses drawn from Jacob & Co.’s clientele, a source close to the case told The Post’s Kati Cornell.
Recent court records show lawyers for "Jacob the Jeweler," who has a store on East 57th Street, detailed their strategy and a list of megastars they intend to call in a sealed submission to a U.S. judge in Detroit.
The bling-meister is accused of accepting cash for jewelry from the members of the Black Mafia Family (BMF) - a Detroit-based drug ring that moved millions of dollars in narcotics - and then failing to file the proper tax forms in a scheme to hide the illegal source of the money.

MORGAN CAREY CONFIRMS MARIAH'S ROLE IN K-TOWN · JANUARY 13TH, 2007 SOURCE: 360X |
|
|
Music journalist Rashmi Shastri's full interview with Mariah's brother, Morgan Carey, is now up on her site. Morgan briefly mentions Mariah in the interview. Excerpts below.
How did you become involved with the music industry?
"I was trying to help my sister, [Mariah Carey] break through at the beginning and get her into the game. A good friend of mine, Gavin Christopher, cut her first demo and I later hired Ben Marguiles to work with her. They went on to write a number of the hits on her first album together. I actually walked her by the hand up to Seymour Stein's office at Sire with that demo. Back then I knew a lot of industry people from having worked in the clubs so I played her stuff for anybody I knew who would listen; Billy Idol, Nona Hendryx, Tina B, The System, etc. Not long after, Mariah and Tommy [Mottola] got together and it went where it went..."
Tell me about the K-Town project.
"I told YG that Skull would be perfect for a part our movie, K-Town. Mariah [Carey] will be playing a part in it, and I thought it would be a great way to introduce YG Entertainment to the U.S. My plan is to release the soundtrack through YG Entertainment, and have a few tracks from YG artists. It's an action driven drama with cross-cultural dilemmas at its core. I can't really say anymore, you'll just have to see it when it comes out."

WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND · JANUARY 12TH, 2007 SOURCE: BLOOMBERG, CNN |

EMI Group Plc, the U.K. record company that signed the Beatles, ousted its two top music executives and forecast lower revenue after disappointing holiday sales.
Alain Levy will leave after five years as chief executive officer of the recorded music division. David Munns, the unit's vice chairman, will also step down. Chairman Eric Nicoli will become CEO of EMI, the world's third-largest music company, and take charge of the record unit, EMI said in a statement today.
EMI shares fell to their lowest in almost a year after the company said music revenue may drop as much as 10 percent. EMI, which released albums by Robbie Williams and Keith Urban in the fiscal second half, had none of the 10 best-selling albums in the U.S. last year, according to Nielsen SoundScan. EMI's revenue has declined as downloads failed to make up for business lost to piracy.
The revenue drop "is pretty scary," said Anthony de Larrinaga, an analyst at SG Securities in London. "The market was getting wise to the fact that some of the release roster in the second half wasn't performing as well as it would need to."
Alain Levy was brought on board in October 2001 to turn around the company, which has seen many of its multi-million dollar artist releases sink with out a trace. Since joining EMI, Levy has been trawling through the company's sprawling empire to find ways to improve profitability as global music sales decline. Under his leadership, his biggest splash was to drop Mariah Carey from her multi-million dollar contract in January 2002.

CAREY BLAMES MEDIA FOR HER OVER - SEXED IMAGE · JANUARY 11TH, 2007 SOURCE: CONTACT MUSIC |
|
|
MARIAH CAREY insists the media is responsible for her overtly sexual image because she is just copying what she sees on magazine covers. The 37-year-old claims the media helps to determine what’s sexy and she’s always just gone along with what she’s been exposed to. She explains, "I think that a lot of women are just trying to live up to the stereotypes and to the standard that’s set on TV and in magazines, which is airbrushed women who weigh three pounds (1.4 kilograms). And it’s not fair. It’s not easy. But everybody gets really protective of me. They’re like, `Be less sexy.’" Carey says if she does go overboard when it comes to her sultry image "It’s not intentional. If you film my body a certain way, it’s gonna look like a certain way." "But honestly, I’ve been the same way since I was a little kid. Like, I’m just emulating whatever’s on a magazine."

MARIAH TO GUEST ON AMERICAN IDOL? · JANUARY 11TH, 2007 SOURCE: ABC NEWS/THE DETRIOT NEWS |
|
|
Last year, Prince. This year, Paul McCartney and Mariah Carey?
As "American Idol" starts singing again Tuesday, those connected with the Fox blockbuster acknowledge few limits when it comes to guest stars or ratings or product spinoffs. Or even rampant enthusiasm.
"American Idol," produced by FremantleMedia and 19 Entertainment, returns with a richer gloss than ever. Last year's finale included a surprise appearance by Prince, among the highest-profile guest stars and far removed from such golden oldie visitors as Rod Stewart.
"Prince blew the doors off. He is one of the quintessential ones of our time," Jackson said. Frot-Coutaz's take: "The fact we can get Prince is a real tribute to the show. ... (now) who knows who we can get?"
McCartney, an iconic figure who's an impressive "get" for any venture, is being courted and is rumored to be part of the new season. Carey may also end up on the guest list.
"Nothing's locked," Frot-Coutaz said of the ex-Beatle. "We've had discussions with him over the years. It's always a matter of making it work."
In Carey's case, record producer-cum-judge Jackson may be the key: He and the singer are friends and have a long professional association. Jackson said they have "tossed it around a bit" but have yet to set her appearance.
Randy Jackson Mentions Mariah (Again)
Here's what Randy Jackson had to say during a teleconference Monday to plug the sixth season of the hit competition show, American Idol:
On the importance of song selection:
"This is a very emotional competition. You have to try and find a song that takes you through the journey. I haven't heard anyone do a Mariah Carey song justice. If you can't sing like Mariah Carey, you shouldn't be singing a Mariah Carey song. When you choose a song that is too big for you, what you're telling me is that you don't know who you are and you don't know what your strengths are."

ASK BILLBOARD: "YOUR PARIS IS GIVING MY CAREY A MINOGUE" · JANUARY 11TH, 2007 SOURCE: BILLBOARD |
|
|
Keith,
You said last week that Mariah Carey is not in the (same) ball park (as) the Beatles. I love both and disagree. Just had to put in my two cents.
However, you said on your list of your favorite 2006 songs (kudos on including Elton John) that you are ready to defend Paris Hilton's album. I'd really like to hear you do so. I absolutely despise it, and I have listened to all of it more than once. No one likes a fun pop record more than me, but I find her singing to have no soul and her voice to have no strength. Why wouldn't I just buy a Kylie Minogue album instead?
I'd love to hear your take on her.
Many thanks,
Rudy Palma
Keith Caulfield of Ask Billboard:
First, if I justify why Paris Hilton's album is good, then you should give me reasons why Mariah Carey is in the same ball park as the Beatles. I'm not saying that you don't have valid reasons - I'm sure you do - but you just didn't say why she should considered on the same level them. As I stated last week, I don't believe her cultural impact is quite the same as the Beatles.
I do think that Carey has achieved extraordinary success and has written and recorded some very memorable songs. Say, "Vision Of Love," "We Belong Together" or "One Sweet Day," for example. Really, I'm not bashing Carey.
It's not a "the Beatles are better than her" sort of thing. Carey is a great singer - one of the best that pop music has seen in the past 20 years. To be honest, there are few acts, if any, that can be held on the same level as the Beatles.
Now, switching gears to Hilton's album. I think that if you were to listen to the album without any knowledge of who the artist is, your impression might be different. I can listen to the album as a pure pop music fan, and admire its qualities. There are some really fun songs on there - like "Nothing In This World," or the "Grease" -sampling "I Want You." Sure, Hilton's voice isn't really all that much to write home about. But it's serviceable - and that's all the songs require. I don't think Hilton set out to create "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band." I believe her only intention was to produce a fun pop album -and that's what she did.
[...]
Sometimes a particular song doesn't require a classically great voice.
Even my favorite artist, Madonna, doesn't have a technically amazing voice.
She's no Mariah or Whitney Houston, obviously. But she can still write, produce and record songs that are great - it's not always about how long you can wail, or what glory note you can hit.

"I can't talk about MC's other gifts as they're a bit naughty." by Jasmine Dotiwala
Just before Christmas I flew out of Heathrow to NYC's JFK airport to begin my yearly adventure with my Xmas cousin Mariah Carey.
Once settled in MC's Manhattan apartment, 15 of us (including MC's bestest mates Maryann, Rachel, Trey Lorenz, and brothers Shawn and Mikey), took off in a convoy of black Maybachs to the sound of carols as we made our way to a private airfield where a Christmas-themed jet awaited us.
We toasted the start of our adventure with DP champagne as we headed to Aspen, Colorado. On our decent into Aspen the snow fell wildly and we could see reindeer and wild horses running about beneath us - it looked so cool!
Our first night was spent exploring Mimi's lodge in the mountains where we were staying: A marvellous six-bedroom house.
Many 4am-moments saw us swigging the Pinot in MC's jacuzzi with the night sky twinkling above us as Evil G, MC's brother Shawn, played the best hip-hop sets on his iPod.
MC encouraged us all to slip into our bikinis – with the boys in their trunks - and jump in and out of the house hottub and snow.
Our housekeeper Maggie woke us daily with the aroma of breakfast cooking and boy could she rustle up a fingerlickin' brekky!
On our second night in Aspen MC had a surprise planned. She had 50 kids from a special care home driven from Denver to Aspen where she arrived with Santa on a sleigh pulled by nine real reindeer. The kids had the time of their lives as MC and Santa gave them gifts of cameras and CD players.
The following night our really cute 18-year-old driver Cody told me that Method Man and Redman were performing that very night. Yes. Really. This really rich, white, city had a hip-hop scene! It had to be seen to be believed so I told MC and we excitedly went to Bellyup, where the troublesome duo were in the flesh.
The club show was ultra fun but not a touch on a real gully London street vibe.
Twenty of us spent Xmas day opening gifts, screaming, eating and lazing about in our Xmas T-shirts.
Amongst my gifts were a Gucci candle, Juicy couture socks and bracelet, a Ralph Lauren cashmere scarf, a sexy little black dress, a shower scrubber with 'nuff accessories, a sequin clutch handbag, Elton John fireside aroma rocks, lots of silly board games, and some very pip jewellry.
I gave MC some cute undies (just the type she likes), a solid silver yo-yo (engraved with 'MC you make my world go round, JD') which she showed off doing tricks with, a very sexy slinky dress by London designer Kesh who made it extra low at the front and back with a big bow at the booty and a diamond hanging slinkily down MC's back (which she paraded in), a blinging gold and grey Rolling Stones lips T-shirt from Topshop and the one she really loved - a black hoodie graffiti tagged by London-based graff artist Batlow who blazed the piece up with pink and violet diamonte! Heavy! (I can't talk about her other gifts as they're a little naughty!)
On our last night we attended a party for Aspen Peak magazine, where MC was the guest of honour. She wore the Rolling Stones lips T-shirt and looked ultra fly with her limited edition not-in-the-stores-yet Louis Vuitton boots.
Once MC had worked the red carpet the party could really begin as she held court in the DJ booth with DJ Suss who was flown out from NYC specially. Suss threw down crazy beats but as you can imagine the Aspen crowd weren't familiar with all the ones we were going crazy to. (In fact they requested stuff like Harry Connick Junior. Sheesh.)
Then Seal and his missus supermodel Heidi Klum joined us and we all hung out, danced and chatted for a bit - they were SO sweet.
At midnight we sped off to the Caribou Club before being whisked straight to Rifle (private) airfield at 2am for our flight back to NYC.
MC has given me a lifetime of memories and adventures that I won't believe took place when I look back at 80 years of age!
My holiday adventure didn't end there, eight hours later we jumped on another jet en route to South Africa for Oprah Winfrey's New Year's Eve party.
Readers, can you bear to miss your 'Juice' next week?
Contrary to popular belief, Jasmine Dotiwala is not just a ghetto 'It' Girl.
She is a senior producer/director of MTV News, MTV Cribs, Making of the Video, Tour Diaries etc.

ASK BILLBOARD: "LEGEND, STAR, DIVA... MARIAH" · JANUARY 11TH, 2007 SOURCE: BILLBOARD |
|
|
Hi Keith!
I have been a Mariah Carey fan since 1998 when she released the song "My All" from the "Butterfly" album. [I want to] know what you think about Carey's status in music industry. Do you think one day she could become a legend? Or do you think she might be just a lucky star in that she has had a lot of success on charts [and sold a lot of albums]?
Thanks in advance for your time!
Dave Corneau
Montreal, Canada
Keith Caulfield of Ask Billboard:
Hi Dave,
Oh boy, another diva question? It does seem like certain acts, no matter how many albums they sell, or No. 1 singles they have, just aren't considered "legendary." Truly, just because you sell a lot, that doesn't mean you are a legend.
Take for example, acts like Bon Jovi, Journey, Celine Dion or Whitney Houston. All have had many hit singles, sold millions of albums, and yet, most would debate whether all of them have reached "legendary" status. (I'm waiting for frustrated Houston fans to write in, angered that I would even suggest she isn't a legend.) With some artists, say, the Beatles, Elvis Presley, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson... it's a no brainer. They are legends. Period.
I think the "legend" perception may have to do with the artist's cultural significance. While Carey will likely end up rewriting history books as the artist with the most No. 1 Hot 100 singles (she gets closer to breaking the Beatles' record every year), has she made the same sort of cultural impact as the Beatles? I think even Carey herself might concede that she's not in the same ballpark as the fab four.
And Carey fans, don't send me hate mail. "The Emancipation of Mimi" was my No. 9 favorite album of 2005.
