ADVICE FOR MUSICIANS WHO ACT   ·    DECEMBER 11TH, 2006 SOURCE: MTV NEWS

Sure, the movie-career launches of Madonna ("Desperately Seeking Susan"), Jewel ("Ride With the Devil") and Faith Hill ("The Stepford Wives") didn’t exactly go according to plan, but no one has ever walked headfirst into a career-trashing truck quite like Mariah did with "Glitter" (2001). Limping into theaters amid her musical meltdown, the 9/11 attacks and her attempts to sell ice cream, "Glitter" probably would have gotten lost in the shuffle even if it were good, but oh, was it bad. Carey has since reinvented herself successfully from a musical point of view, but after the merciless drubbing that tarnished "Glitter," it’s doubtful that we’ll ever see another movie from Mimi.

CHRISTMAS HITS   ·    DECEMBER 11TH, 2006 SOURCE: BBC NEWS

The chart also saw the return of some festive favourites.

Merry Xmas Everybody by Slade was at 22, with Fairytale of New York by the Pogues and Kirsty MacColl one place lower.

Two classic Christmas songs also sold enough downloads to have made the top 40 - but they were ineligible for the chart because they were not available as CD singles in the shops.

These were Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas is You and Last Christmas by Wham!

Aired yesterday on VH1, Mariah's dog Jack's cross-country limo ride from New York to Los Angeles made the "20 Most Outrageous Celebrity Extravagances Ever" at #16.

    #16 Mariah's Dog Delivery
Mariah Carey has done a lot of silly things but perhaps nothing beats the time when she arranged a cross-country limo ride for her dog and racked up on #16 most outrageous celebrity extravagance.

Chris Rovzar, NY Daily News: "Mariah loves her Jack Russell Terrier, Jack, and the two of them are inseparable. He had appeared in several of her videos. He's everywhere that she is."

In 2005, Mariah took pet ownership to new extremes. It all started when the canine-craving diva was stranded at a video shoot in L.A. and she was desperate for a little doggy companionship. Meanwhile, Jack was pining away in their New York penthouse. And while most pet owners would just suck it up, Mariah called her travel agent.

Jonah Weiner, Blender Magazine: "So Mariah has her dog brought to the airport. She wants him put in a first-class seat and they tell her, 'We can't do that, it's a dog'."

Jack might have been grounded but not for long. Mariah quickly arranged for a chauffeured limousine to drive her doggy 3,000 miles cross-country to L.A. and drive home one of the most unfathomable pop star expenses ever.

  • MARIAH TO PORN STAR: BACK OFF MY NAME, BITCH   ·    DECEMBER 10TH, 2006 SOURCE: TMZ

Pop diva Mariah Carey is trying to stop porn star Mary Carey from trademarking her name, claiming that fans might get confused. Entertainment Weekly reports that Mary Carey, who has starred in films like "Double Air Bags" and "Boobsville Sorority Girls," finds the whole thing "silly." We’re guessing Mariah just doesn’t want anything distracting from her dynamic duo.

Maureen "Mau" Marcelo’s first of 3 songs during the finale performance on the first season of Philippine Idol was Mariah Carey’s Love Takes Time. It was her own song choice. Mau received standing ovation from the audience for her 3 finale performances (the 2nd song was chosen by the judges, and the 3rd song by Sony BMG Philippines executives, to become her first official single). Mau cites Mariah as one of her major inspirations and idols, and she also dreams of performing a duet with her foreign idol. Mau sang the Mariah ballad on Dec 9, and today, Dec 10, it was announced that she won the competition, with over 36% of the votes (the Top 3 competed in the finale, unlike in other versions of the Idol where only the top 2 compete in the final round). MARIAH CAREY BATTLES PORN STAR OVER NAME   ·    DECEMBER 9TH, 2006 SOURCE:ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY

GRAMMY-WINNING pop singer Mariah Carey is trying to block porn star and politician Mary Carey from trademarking her similar-sounding stage name, saying that fans could get the two performers confused.

The adult film actress, whose real name is Mary Cook, said today that she would not be intimidated by the international superstar and will press forward with her trademark application.

"I’m ready to battle Mariah over this because I’ve been Mary Carey for a long time," said the actress, who started using the stage name in 2002.

"It’s kind of funny because I’m a porn star and I’ve been being myself for a long time. I think she’s being silly."

The star of such films as Double Air Bags 11 and Boobsville Sorority Girls, who once ran for California governor against Arnold Schwarzenegger, filed the trademark papers earlier this year.

In October, a lawyer for Mariah Carey sent Mary Carey’s representatives a letter threatening legal action if she did not withdraw the application.

"Mary Carey and Mariah Carey share the identical surname and have first names that are very similar," attorney Robert Becker wrote.

In part because the porn star was seeking the trademark for audio and video recordings, he said: "Confusion between your client and her Mary Carey trademark and our client and its Mariah Carey trademark is therefore likely."

Mr Becker also demanded that Mary Carey use her name only for "adult entertainment" and that she not sing or perform music.

Mariah Carey, who suffered a brief career slump after dominating the pop charts during the 1990s, had a major comeback with last year’s The Emancipation of Mimi, the best-selling pop album of 2005. She won a Grammy for the single We Belong Together.

  • MARIAH MENTIONS    ·    DECEMBER 8TH, 2006 SOURCE: FEBRUARY SKY

New York Post: No alcohol, no drugs and a happy marriage let Blige slim down by 40 pounds and toss aside divas such as Mariah Carey and Beyoncé on concert stages, including a triumphant gig at Madison Square Garden earlier this summer.

Blige earned five of her eight nominations in the R&B field. The toughest of those is for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for "Be Without You," for which she’ll be competing against Beyoncé’s "Ring the Alarm," Mariah Carey’s "Don’t Forget About Us," Natalie Cole§s "Day Dreaming" and India.Arie’s "I Am Not My Hair."

St. Petersburg Times: Last year, the recording academy capped Mariah Carey’s comeback from tipsy bubblehead to chart-topping powerhouse with eight nominations.

This year, the 49th version of "music’s biggest night" could be a celebration of Mary J. Blige, whose album The Breakthrough details her triumph over drug addiction and toxic men. When nominations were announced Thursday for the Feb. 11 event, the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul scored a leading eight, including R&B album of the year.

New York Daily News: Of the newbies, Creekwater has a deep tone and a smooth enough flow, revealed best on the jazz-funk "There He Is." Stat Quo has a more fitful style, showcased to his favor on "By My Side." But it’s guys like Banks and 50 Cent who steal the attention on the single "You Don’t Know." And no one comes close to Em himself on cuts like "Public Enemy #1," where he fires off 50 rounds of verbal power against a bare backbeat. Even better, the riotous "Jimmy Crack Corn" features Em’s rudest put-downs yet of nemesis Mariah Carey.

  • ASPEN PEAK MAGAZINE: "CAREY-ED AWAY"   ·    DECEMBER 7TH, 2006 SOURCE: ASPEN PEAK MAGAZINE

Despite a hectic travel schedule and an endless to-do list, globetrotting superstar Mariah Carey always makes her way back to Aspen.

Megastardom does not come without its hard work, passion, generous spirit, and quest for new and creative outlets… at least for Mariah Carey. The singer, songwriter, actress, and soon-to-be fragrance maker is on the go, on her way to Aspen, and has no plans of slowing down.

ASPEN PEAK: You recently wrapped up your US tour for your CD, The Emancipation of Mimi, and you’re already heading for Japan. How are you feeling?
MARIAH CAREY: This is usually my vocal rest day. I just did a couple of shows back to back. I don’t speak between shows, but this is my favorite magazine! I’m on my way to the airport, heading for Japan, and that tour is close to three weeks. I just came from Phoenix, and we had a slight party afterward, which I don’t really do. Right now, it’s all about the plane ride and silence.

AP: So this US tour was the first time you traveled by tour bus….
MC: I loved it. Everybody was laughing at me, like, “Yeah, right. You’re so never gonna do that.” I know I have this diva thing, but I really did like it.

AP: How was the experience overall?
MC: I had a lot of private time, which I don’t usually. My apartment in Tribeca is really big and there are people around all the time. This was cozy. It felt like I had more independence. My dog Jack had his little nook. He has become a celebrity in his own right—he was nominated for two Relly awards [from Live with Regis and Kelly]. The funniest part is that he’s taking the tour bus home right now.

AP: How does this tour compare with ones in the past?
MC: In my opinion, it was the biggest and best tour I’ve ever done. We had great supporting acts. Sean Paul opened up the first half of the tour. Busta Rhymes did the whole West Coast. It was great having them out there. The crowd was so diverse—from 14-year-old girls to 24-year-old hip-hop guys to older married couples.

AP: How many people tour with you?
MC: We had about 78 people, 13 trucks, and eight buses.

AP: I hear you’re going to South Africa in December with Oprah when she opens a new school for girls. How did this come about?
MC: Oprah sent me an invitation. I had been to the Legends Ball as well, which was amazing and one of the most—no, the most—fabulous event I’ve ever been to in my life. The luncheon and the special care and time she took for her guests were amazing. And this trip should be an incredible piece of history, so I’m looking forward to being there. It’s an honor and privilege to be invited.

AP: You’ll be in Aspen for Christmas—how were you introduced to the town?
MC: I’ll be there… for Christmas Day. I love the lead up to Christmas. I’ve been going [to Aspen] since about 1997. I went to Telluride first, which was cool and pretty.

AP: What do you plan to do here?
MC: I’m not a great skier at all. I take one run and ski in an outfit that’s cute. The point is that I love having a white Christmas. I love the vibe of Aspen… not necessarily the whole paparazzi-celebrity thing, which is cool, but I do stuff like going on sleigh rides with friends. We go all out to really have the most lovely Christmas and to relive my dreams of being a kid. Being out in Aspen is always so amazing and picturesque. I have a sense of feeling at home there.

AP: Are there any places you go every year?
MC: I usually go to Matsuhisa—I think it’s my favorite of all the Nobu restaurants. I’ve seen Chef Nobu there more than I’ve seen him in Japan. I’m usually at Joan Boyce’s jewelry store. I like Piñons. Their salad is my favorite.

AP: Back to the slopes: Do you ski only on Aspen Mountain?
MC: I’ve been to Snowmass. I think it’s easier for skiers like me. I don’t want to sit here and talk about how bad I am, but here’s the problem—I’m not an early-to-rise person. I really like to sleep, so by the time I get to the slopes, it’s always like the last run, so if I go to a snowboarding class or something, I’m not going to get much time in. I might as well ski one run and call it a day. But this year I’m going to try to go snowboarding. I haven’t gotten past the “fall on your buttocks” stage yet, so I’m waiting for that to happen.

AP: But you’ll have your friends here to look out for you.
MC: Yeah. I’ll have friends and extended family here. I have a friend from England who’s coming and in and another from Sweden who’s been a friend since the 10th grade.

AP: Do you stay in the same place each year?
MC: I try different places, but I really would like to have a place in Aspen one day. I’m a very specific person. I built the place where I live now, and I’ve built places before. I kind of like things to be exactly how I like them. We know what that process takes… a billion years and a billion dollars!

AP: Would you like to live in town?
MC: I think something on the outskirts would be cool, but I could come in if I wanted to. I really like the serenity, and it looks like something out of an incredible painting. It’s so gorgeous. It’s not just about celebrity moments there. It’s about fun. I actually go tubing all the time.

AP: You once worked with a charity and brought children here from Denver, who were living in an orphanage. Will you do that again this year?
MC: I’m trying to. It’s a lot of fun, and Christmas is obviously about giving and sharing. If that means your time and creating a fun environment for kids, I think that’s something everyone should try to do. It’s really important for me to give back. I feel I’ve been so blessed. Last year we went ice skating [with the kids], which is pretty funny to watch. It’s like watching me ski.

AP: Do you hike when you’re here?
MC: Sort of, kind of. I don’t think it would qualify in a hiking manual. I go on walks near where I’m staying, which usually has wooded areas and brooks.

AP: Where do you want to stay this year?
MC: I don’t know yet, but it has to have a hot tub. I like to get out of the hot tub and roll in the snow. Someone told me that was a tradition in Aspen, but maybe they were lying to me. It’s a tradition for us to have Santa Claus-looking bikinis, jump in the hot tub, and roll in the fresh snow.

AP: So after the week here, and then South Africa with Oprah, what’s next on your agenda?
MC: I’m working on a movie that I’ve been really excited about called Tennessee, produced by Lee Daniels, who was the producer of Monster’s Ball and The Woodsman.

AP: What’s your role in the film?
MC: I play a waitress who is a down-home country girl. It’s an ensemble piece and a nice role. The story is about two brothers who are on a journey to find their estranged father.

AP: When will the film be released?
MC: The goal is before Christmas 2007.

AP: You have a lot in front of you.
MC: Another big priority is a fragrance I’m launching with Elizabeth Arden. It’s the first time I’ve ever done a fragrance. It’s been an amazing and creative process. You sit down with the “juice” companies, and then they show you the different scents. You then compose the scent. The process was very similar to writing a song. The fragrance is almost done, and next is the bottling and then the marketing campaign. The fragrance will come out in conjunction with a new album, which I’ll start working on right after Christmas.

AP: Is there a working title?
MC: There is, but I can’t tell you right now!

AP: You’ve had an amazing success with The Emancipation of Mimi. You must be very proud of it.
MC: I’m really proud of winning the BMI Songwriter of the Year, and Song of the Year awards… it meant a lot to me. Unless people see you sitting behind a piano or strumming a guitar, they don’t recognize you as a true songwriter, which I consider myself to be first and foremost. A lot of people don’t realize that.

    AP: Quite a year, right?
MC: The whole time I was just really looking forward to coming to Aspen.

    BRITNEY’S EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION?   ·    DECEMBER 7TH, 2006 SOURCE: E! ONLINE, NEWSDAY

No doubt Britney Spears would love to launch a comeback like the one Mariah Carey pulled off with The Emancipation of Mimi.

No doubt she will. But how?

First—after she starts wearing underwear again—she should sign on with Carey’s team. And I’m told she’s already working on that. I hear the 25-year-old former pop princess recently met with Carey’s high-profile manager, Benny Medina, about the possibility of teaming up.

Medina wasn’t the only potential career-builder she met with in recent weeks. She also reportedly tried to snag Christina Aguilera’s manager, Irving Azoff, but he turned her down, because she was offering him less than his requisite 10 percent.

When news broke that Spears and hubby Kevin Federline were splitting, she dumped her manager and reunited with Larry Rudolph, the man who originally helped steer her to the top of the pop charts.

Medina, who many believed was the inspiration for Will Smith’s character on the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, has been credited for Carey’s reinvention and Tyra Banks’ ever-expanding empire. Also on his roster: Simple Life star Nicole Richie.

Medina did not get back to me by deadline, and a rep for Spears said she did not know whether a meeting had or had not taken place.

TO A LESS "TOXIC" NEW YEAR

Yesterday LA Times published a small feature article on Britney Spears. Mariah was mentioned as an example of what Britney needed to do to have a successful comeback:

Resolution No. 2: "I will become the next Mariah Carey, not the new Michael Jackson."

There’s plenty of ways to approach a comeback, but not all of them are wise. "I think there will be ridiculous expectations on that first single no matter what she does," said Jay Frank, chief of programming for Yahoo Music. "So I think she just needs to get that single out and move on with life…. That would be better than trying to come back with some grandiose, full-blown album."

Frank said the model should be Carey, who was written off and responded like the Rocky Balboa of divas. "She walked away, stayed low-profile and just worked really hard." Carey also embraced a leaner, contemporary hip-hop sound. The result: Grammy nominations and the second-best selling CD of 2005.

What’s the worst approach? Frank said Jackson’s pattern of inflated and unfocused projects and haughty resistance to starting from scratch. "That," Frank said, "could be a disaster for Britney."

Rick Dees, the venerable morning DJ now on Movin’ 93-FM, said the audience’s fascination with Spears was still potent but that it could easily flip into disdain. "She needs to be careful. I’d hate to think she’s getting desperate. You wonder who’s giving her advice."
